This topic has opened up many "a can of worms". I do not own a 7MM WSM, but I do have a 7MM Mag and 300 WSM. I like them both, and they both have their good and bad points. If I were to make a choice between the 7MM Mag and the 7MM WSM, at my age I would pick the 7MM WSM. Mainly because it is a short action rifle which can be somewhat lighter and a little easier to carry. As for ballistics they are very very close. With the 300 WSM it is best to stay with a lighter bullet 180gr or less, the heavier longer bullets don't fit well in the short fat case. I suspect this might be the case with the 7MM WSM. If you want to learn more about the short mags check out www.shortmags.org

If I had decided that a "magnum" was what would work best for what I wanted the rifle to do, and that 7mm was the size. I would then also have to consider the 7mmSTW as well as the 7mmWSM and 7mmRemMag. The STW has a real edge on both when it come to the heavier bullets.

the advantage is a lighter rifle and the short action with the short mags . the 7mm rem mag has more options of bullets factory loaded so your going to have more options unless you handload . the ballistics for the 7mm rem mag and the 7mm wsm are close :

both shooting federal 160gr nosler partition

velocity
7mm wsm
muzzle :3160fps
100 yds :2950fps
200 yds :2760fps
300 yds :2570fps
400 yds :2380fps
500 yds :2210fps
7mm rem mag
muzzle :2950fps
100yds :2770fps
200yds :2590fps
300yds :2420fps
400yds :2250fps
500yds :2090fps

energy
7mm wsm
muzzle :3545ft-lbs
100yds :3095ft-lbs
200yds :2695ft-lbs
300yds :2335ft-lbs
400yds :2020ft-lbs
500yds :1735ft-lbs

7mm rem mag
muzzle :3090ft-lbs
100yds :2715ft-lbs
200yds :2375ft-lbs
300yds :2075ft-lbs
400yds :1800ft-lbs
500yds :1555ft-lbs

bullet drop (sighted in @200 yds)
7mm wsm
300yds :-5.8inches
400yds :-17.0inches
500yds :-34.2inches

7mm rem mag
300yds :-6.7inches
400yds :-19.4inches
500yds :-39.0inches

recomendations : you could say the short mag because by looking at the ballistics it beats the rem mag . but i THINK that you can fit one more cartridge in the magazine with the rem mag . the rem mag will also be easier to find in stores to with more selection . they are both great cartridges and will take the same game as one another your choice .

hope this helped , good luck

o yea the ballistics are from federals 2004 catalog

I have a 7mm wsm and it kicks like a mule. In my opinion, it kicks MUCH harder than the 7mm rem mag, but I do like the short action much better.

Playing devil advocate to myself, in the 7mm range I perfer the
280 Rem. If the 140 &150g slug are the issue then the 280 rules.

Well, I've got a 7mm Remington Magnum and it has dropped everything I've shot with it (up to elk @250 yards) with 1 shot. I'll put it up against the short any day and I've carried it for miles, never got TOO heavy and did everything I asked it to do.
