This topic comes up so very frequently, that I thought it might be a good idea to post the information here and to make it a permanent Sticky. I can not verify the accuracy for most of the sites listed below, but they are the best information that I have at this time.

Bert H. and members,

I'm going to make this a temporary sticky which can still be added to and saved by everyone. We'll see how it goes for the next couple of weeks and decide from there as far as where to put information such as this permanently.

Thanks to everyone for starting and helping with this form of data base.

Best.

Thanks, you have covered most of my guns. How about Remingtons, Ward Western Field, and Ted Williams (Sears) as several have been passed down thru the family.

Hello Don,

If your Winchester serial number list was published by George Madis (or any other author for that matter), it is not accurate. The primary reason I posted this topic was to provide people with the only known accurate source of information for Winchester firearms. The Cody Firearms Museum (CFM) is currently in the process of correcting and rewriting the serial number tables for several different models. If you would like a copy of the initial article published by the CFM curator (David Kennedy) concerning this topic, please contact me via PM.

Bill Goforth's excellent site. All the information/serial numbers that's
currently available on I.J.'s, H & R's, old 19th Century Suicide Specials, etc.

http://www.geocities.com/iverjohnsoncollector/

Update: Unfortunately Bill Goforth passed away in 2010, and his website is no longer active. Bill published several reference books, and the information can be found in them.

I would NOT recommend the link given for M1903 rifles -- it is not accurate. Try this one instead.

I posted this as a new topic, but I'll say it here since this where it belongs. I went to the Browning website using the link in a earlier post. It gave a range of serial #'s and years but nothing all that specific before WW2. If the serial # is under xxxxx it is pre WW2. The 2 serial #'s on mine are pre-WW2 but a member answered saying 1938 and 1938 for the 2 serial #'s. Maybe I just missed a page on the website.

Hello Myles,

I was the person who gave you the 1937 and 1938 dates repectively.

Yes, the information on the Browning website is lacking for the early years. That said, there is a really superb reference book titled "Browning Auto-5 Shotguns, The Belgian FN Production" that does list the serial numbers by years.

1937 198001 - 213000
1938 213001 - 228000

What about SIG's?

No, there is not a website. Contact your local P.D. and ask them to run the serial numbers.

Hello Double Stack,

Well for starters, it is not a "WINCHESTER"... instead, it is a U.S. Repeating Arms Co. Model 94 (the maker of Winchester trademarked firearms from 1981 - 2006), and they can be contacted at - http://www.winchesterguns.com/services/index.asp or call their Consumer Department directly at: 800-333-3288 or 801-876-2711.

Bert after reading these sticky's one can only highly appreciate your efforts.
Here's the link that I origionally typed in my model 94 to find the "1950" mfr date. Obviously not as accurate as your records.

Thanks again!!

Here's a serial number/DOM listing for Ithaca shotguns from 1880-1986. It also contains listings for Baker, Crass, Lewis, Manier, Flues, NID, Knick, LeFever and Western types.

www.diamondgunsmithing.com/page5/page23/index.html

I can't vouch for it's accuracy, but the site is run by a guy who states he was Ithaca's head gunsmith for 28 years.

Hello, I want to research a Winchester Model 1894, but they want $150 membership fee plus another $60 per rifle. Is there anyone that will do this service for less than that? I really do not want to spend $210 to get the history of one rifle.

Hello Jason,

It is not necessary to become a member (the $150 fee) to purchase a Factory letter... you only need to spend the $60 for the letter. It is not possible for somebody else to do the service... only the Cody Firearms Museum (CFM) has the original factory ledgers. In order to get a factory letter from the CFM for your Model 1894, the serial number must be <354,000. If the serial number is >353,999, I can provide some of the information that you are seeking.

Use the link after my signature line name to contact the CFM.
