thank you and i will look for the book, but in the mean time were the weaver b4 scopes made before the weaver j4 scopes and which are considered better or are they about the same quality?

Nick Stroebel's book will give you a general idea. His origional book has apparently achieved collector's status with prices ranging $100-$250. But he has a new one out that includes iron sights. That one sells for around 30 bucks.

The J 4's were made between 1947 & 1967. The B 4's 1954 & 1966. Your inquiring about 40+ year old optical technology. Compared to modern scopes both would be usable, if the optics and mechanical adjustments were functional. But you would be a lot better off with a modern high quality scope. Stroebel puts a higher collectors value on the J4 scope.

very well thank you, the scope would be for a vintage .22 target rifle so i wanted to at least mount a period correct scope onto the rifle.
what other weaver vintage .22 4x scopes do you show that were made during the 1940's?

During WWII, hardly any commercial scopes were made. The most appropriate Weavers would be the 333, 344 and 355. Mossberg made inexpensive target scopes during that period that had surprisingly good optics and usually are still usable today.

mossberg tubular scopes seem to be problematic from being broken, dirty or have cracked or cloudy lenses and these were ones in supposedly very good condition...however the mossberg .22 target rifles are very well made and extremely accurate.

Just received the new Stroebel book in the mail a couple hours ago. Looks like an excellent reference.
