| I have a Remington Model 799 in .223 rem. It is made by Zastava. The first three or four times I loaded the magazine, everything was fine. Since then, I have not been able to get more than one round in the magazine! One goes in, then it seems to hang up. I can't see or feel any burrs or anything in there. I wonder if anyone else has this issue with this gun? I bought this gun because I wanted a .223 bolt action with the capacity for more than one shot without reloading. It seems as if I have a single shot after all. I bought it used from Gander Mt. The gun looks absolutely new, I can't find a flaw on it. Am I doing something wrong? Is this just a finicky gun? Help!! |

| Sounds like the follower is tipped or there is something binding it. |

Does the box magazine open on the bottom? If it does, you should be able to open it and see if it is binding, or if there is a flaw of some kind.
I know that the Charles Daly imports of the Zastavas had a box magazine that opened, but I do not know if the Remington 799s open. |

| Take it back to Gander mountain and tell them to fix it, or replace it. |

Most likely there is a small lip/edge that the follower is hanging up on, often at the mag box/receiver junction. A slight radius/bevel on the top of the mag box and the bottom of the follower should let them slide by each other. |

Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

| Thanks for the info guys. It doesn't have the box mag, just a hinged plate with the spring attached. I bought it in the fall of 2008, and just haven't had time to fool with it since then- so taking it back to Gander Mt.(a 4 hour drive to boot) is probably not an option. I'm taking a long weekend hunting, so I'll get after it next week. I'm thinking the bevel idea is a good one. I'll let you all know how it turns out. Thanks again. |

Olds fan The metal sleeve that fits inside of the stock, between the hinged floorplate and the receiver, is what we are refering to as the mag box (vs a detatchable box magazine, which is what I think you think we are refering to). Just about every Mauser design uses one. It needs to sit under the receiver, without any exposed edges to catch the follower in either direction (when the follower sticks down, you get a failure to feed problem).
I've had the same problem with a CZ, and it was a simple matter of breaking one sharp edge and making sure that the mag box got seated properly in the receiver bottom on assembly. Take it apart, and with the stock out of the way, look at how all the mag parts fit together. It shouldn[t be to hard to spot the issue(s). |
