I've read several theories about the meaning of the 'dots' which appear on the slides of some CZ 52's.

These are not rebuild marks. Rebuild marks are found on the right side of the weapon, and include the date of the rebuild. The dots also appear on never-rebuilt guns, which are identified by their original finish, unstaked trigger pins, lack of rebuild markings, and other criteria.

They are also not accuracy indicators. The manager of the Czech plant in Strakonice, where the pistols were manufactured, once discsussed the meaning of the markings on the CZ 52's, and did not include the dots as having any significance for interpretation outside the plant.

Lt. Col. Jan Hanousek, Czech Army Ordnance Corp, was quoted in 'Streleka' (a Czech firearms journal) as stating that the dots were from Rockwell hardness testing, which would be of interest only to engineers or quality control people. Additional information on this might be obtainable through 'Streleka' from Jan Balcar, who wrote the article.

Control is an illusion, because nobody knows what's going to happen next.

No body really knows what the dots are for, not even the Czechs. One 52 I ran across had 7 "dots". Why the heck would they have had to Rockwell a original 52 that had never been rebuilt 7 times. Don't make sense, all you have to do is Rockwell it once, twice at the most.

Rufe, I agree with most of that, I've owned CZ 52's with as many as seven dots. I began to wonder if calibration or repeatability demonstrations were somehow involved. I was quoting the most reliable information that I can find, and it certainly makes more sense than being able to add another rebuild mark to a gun, just by dropping it.

Maybe I'll go off in the more popular direction, and just hatch a story that the dots represent the day of the week.

Control is an illusion, because nobody knows what's going to happen next.
