I need a Marlin 1894CSS .357 Magnum rifle. Iíve needed one for a couple of years, but havenít got around to putting in an order. I read a post the other day that Marlin will be closing the doors in about a year, so I decided itís time to make a move since it took about a year and a half to get a Marlin 1894SS .44 Magnum.

I did some poking around on the internet and it looks like there isnít a 1894CSS for sale in the United States. What are the odds they will do another run big enough for me to get one before they go out of business?

Before somebody asks why I need one, I have no use for one at all, I just need one.

James, Marlin isn't going to shut down for good. They are moving out of CT to either Ilion, NY or TN (or both...not really sure).

I am worried that their quality will slip. Remington has not had the best QA program lately.

I mean to kill you in one minute, Ned. Or see you hanged in Fort Smith at Judge Parker's convenience. Which'll it be?

I've always wanted one. But I'll wait until they're way too overpriced then get me one that don't shoot so good.

At least that's how I tend to buy 'em.

They are smart rifles to own and the crazy prices reflect that.
They are popular in Cowboy shoots which probably accounts for the demand.
A while back before Win and Marlin made 357 lever guns, Model 92s in 32-20 were often converted to that caliber.

montanajoe, thatís what Iíll probably get after I figure out Iíll never get a 1894CSS. The only difference between the 1894C and the 1894CSS is stainless steel. Thanks though.

Colonel Plink, looks like theyíve gone up a couple hundred bucks in two years. I try to follow the Colonel Plink system, but I had no idea they would go up that much that fast. Well, I guess it doesnít really matter since there ainít any.

I collect Ruger #1s. For a short period they had them in 357. I procrastinated until there was no more available. This year they have them in 460 S&W. Already have the local shop owner looking out for one.

Good luck in your hunt.

The guy at the gun shop in Danville didnít even want to put one on backorder for me. Heís of the opinion that all they might make are already spoken for.

I might ride over to Halifax tomorrow and see if the boy at Abbots Feed and Seed will put one on backorder. He might not know any better.

Stay away from the micro groove rifling unless you are going to shoot jacketed bullets. The micro groove is terrable with cast bullets unless you go up to 180 grn cast and then it will at least hit the thing you are aiming at.

Gun is ready as I stand in line
Nervous wait for the whistle to blow
Rush of blood and over we go

I sure hope it is Tennessee. We are a gun friendly state, plus we have some of the best tax incentives for business.

James - I have one of the original .357 mag 16" carbines. It is one of the most spot-on accurate guns I own. It is not stainless, I like the blue guns. It has great wood, and I favor the pistol grip stock over the straight stock.

What does the 'CSS' designate ??

The CSS stands for Compact Stainless Steel. I recently bought a 336Y. 16" barrel with a youth stock in 30-30/ Very rare and very tiny. Might have to get a holster for it!

had a neighbor who owned a #1 in .357 Mag that was a limited run to honor the California Highway Patrol--I've never seen another one at a show or shop again. The #1 in .460 would be cool--hope you can also shoot .454 & .45 Colt through it and don't see why you couldn't. They also have it in .475 Linebaugh/.480 Ruger too.

James I bet they won't do any big runs but can't your dealer check to see if it can be special ordered? Davidsons says theirs is currently allocated but not to whom-maybe you can call them and ask-buy it and have it shipped to your local FFL? Lipseys looks like they may have one but you will have to call them to verify.

Marlin wonít talk to local dealers. They will talk to me, but wonít sell to me. The only people they deal with are distributors.

I have one on order at Abbott Farm Supply in Halifax. He told me Monday the estimated delivery date is about a year. Considering it took a little over a year and a half to get the .44, a year ainít so bad. The dealer in Danville said the lead time is so far out he wonít put one on backorder.

If I make a deal with Goatroper I can quit looking. If not Iíll probably put a bid on the one on GunBroker.

Well keep up on your local dealer James to check with his distributors regularly. I had to do that for almost 3 weeks waiting for my new Bisley Blackhawk--first the distributor was out then only had a different barrel length-but when they finally came in they actually called my dealer to ask if it was still a go or not(Lipseys did this--can't say what other distributors will do).
