Do you suppose snakes eat chicken food?

I've got this really weird thing going on with our remaining chicken(s). When I come home at night to let her out she acts like she's starving. She's producing eggs like 5 chickens, but she's also consuming a tremendous amount of chicken food for one chicken.

There's a resident bull snake in the coop. He doesn't mess with the chicken, or her eggs, so the wife and I leave him be. He's a big fella too.

Tonight when I came home the chicken was just freakin' she was so hungry. I took her in the garage and gave her a bowl of food. She gobbled that up like nobody's business. She seemed like she hadn't eaten in a week. When I took her out of the coop, Mr. bull snake retreated back into his hole, which I noticed is now kind of over near where we put her food.

Do you suppose he could be eating the food also? Or, is it just some other critters eating it which he, in turn, is feeding on?

C&P,,,,

Although there are many different species of snakes world-wide, each and every one of them have at least one thing in common. All snakes are Carnivores, which means they eat meat. Snakes rely on other species of animals to keep them alive.

Snakes presence is keeping her stressed out enough that she can't relax enough to eat.

The sky was yellow and the sun was blue,

How then, could she be "laying like 5 hens"? A nervous hen lays no egg.

Put a game cam out and see what is happening. Sounds like rats are eating chicken food and the bull snake stays close by and harvests a rat once in awhile......

That would be my guess, and rats will kill chickens.

That was exactly my thought also. So, for an example; I got three eggs today. I had picked up and egg from her Tuesday night (late)...and today there were 3 eggs. She normally lays two a day (she's always been that way).

Probem is snakes kill predators on grain; mice, rats.....

It is getting colder and the rodents are looking for someplace to winter. Don't blame the snake for taking advantage of an opportunity.

My dad used to tell a story about a city slicker visiting the farm, and he saw a black snake, grabbed a shovel, and killed it, and the farmer grabbed a shovel and hit the city slicker.

Snakes don't eat chicken feed, nor do they drink milk, despite what Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote.
