some background to my question...prior to being deployed to iraq(again)started to go thru my dads attic..with my mom and brother..dad died a few years ago and spent 37 yrs in the marines retireing as a lt general...he spent time in ww2 and korea as well as vietnam..during this time he had collected everything from his military life from magazines to cigerette packs..he had quite a collection..we still have the basement to go thru and have just now almost finished the attic..dad was a gun nut and we have found..german lugers (4) type 99 jap rifles (3) jap swords and flags with jap writeing on them..german mausers (2)some jap pistols and several M1 garands and 3 M1 carbines which are all rockola mfg..the garands look to be used very little or unissued hard for me to tell mark and i talked about this once before so i have a pretty good handle on these..which are two springfields, two internationals and two H&R'S..my question is on two that i find different from the others..these are in seperate rifle bags..they are what appear to be standard M1's..but they have a leather laced cheek pad on each and a leather sling were the others have web..both have scope mounts but they are different..one has a removeable mount with a dovetail that slids on a bracket attached to the receiver locked in place with two locking screw lever looking things..has a scope that i have never heard of so it may be aftermarket as i don't know alot about scopes..but it says lyman M73..barrel date on this rifle is 7-44..real good shape..this other has a removable mount which attaches to a fixed base plate of some type on the barrel held in place by one screw and a dowl pin..it also has a nice scope another lyman but it says M82..now these scopes were not mounted on the rifles but were in a padded tube with a strap..i guess to be carried on the shoulder or something..also a small bag that holds the flash cone on the barrel..it is removable..barrel date on this one is 8-44..i don't know if they ever made scopes for M1's so maybe someone added this later..i have heard of folks here wanting to know were they can get a mount for a scope for there M1's so maybe someone added this themselves..any info would be helpful

Slidder..... There was a sniper Garand called the M1D that was made for the military.

It had a flash hider, leather cheek piece, and scope mounted on it.
Mark would be able to help you identify the correct scope mount for the rifle.

Sounds like a WWII sniper rifle used in the Pacific. Saw a show once on the History channel, "Tales of the Gun'' about them!

Sounds like an M1D to me, and if it is you've got a rare piece......(among the other rare pieces; rockola carbines bring quite a premium.)

Oh, just noticed you have two. If I remember correctly (which I rarely do)I think they made an M1C and an M1D. I think both were snipers (I know the D was), and obviously the D had a few changes from the C. Where's Mark when you need him?

The Garand with the receiver mount is an M1C and was the first issue Garand purpose built as a sniper rifle. These can bring up to several thousand dollars if they are original and correct and there is a known serial number range for M1C's. The rifle with the barrel mounted scope is an M1D and came along after the M1C as a simplified sniper modification which could be performed at nearly any maitanence level rather than at the factory as the M1C demanded. Although neither Garand sniper type has ever been documented to have seen combat during WWII, both M1C and M1D rifles were used in Korea and the post war period. The M1C was declared substitute standard after WWII and many were converted back to standard M1 service rifles by removing the receiver mount and plugging the holes, but many remained in inventory for issue to snipers. Since an M1C could be produced at nearly any level at any time at all it does not bring the same money as the factory built M1C and is hard to document as original without release papers from the DCM/CMP or the military. The M73 scope is not correct for an M1C as this model scope was issued only with the M1903A4 Springfield sniper rifles. The correct scope for your M1C would be an M81 or M82, either of which would also be correct on your M1D. I would once again urge you to seek out an expert appraisal of these M1's as there are hard fast limits to what serious information can be provided without a physical examination of the rifles.

If I were in your position, I would pay for an appraisal from Scott Duff (www.scott-duff.com); he is a nationally recognized US military arms dealer & author. Your M1's, & possibly your carbines, are worth too much to leave to chance. Although the cost of shipping the rifles might be high, if you send him an email, you may find that he has plans to be a gun show in your area.

Or, you might consider asking for help from the Garand Collectors Assoc; they may have a member in your area who would be willing to help you.
