Looking to get a rough year of manufacture on a Winchester 1400 MK II 20G
Serial #: N789XXX ... is that a '78? Or do the last two numbers indicate manufacturer date?

Thanks.

Hello jsergovic...

According to the information I have, the Model 1400 MK II was only in production from 1968 - 1978 (replaced by the Model 1500 XTR), but I have no specific information on the serial number ranges for those years.

The serialization information I have indicates the 1400 was introduced in 1964 and discontinued in 1968. The Mark II model replaced the 1400 in 1968 and was discontinued in 1974. This is different than given above. My source is Winchester Dates of Manufacture 1849-2000 by George Madis. Many of Winchesters records were lost or destroyed in the past and likely 1968 to 1974 is as tight as you will be able to get it. I have the same problem with an H&R rifle.

Hello He Dog...

That is just another case (one of many) where Mr. Madis' is incorrect. If you want the closer truth on the various Winchester Models and the production dates & numbers, find the various books written by Herbert Houze (he was a former employee of Winchester, and had access to all of the existing records).

Mr. Madis is terribly inaccurate on several of the different Winchester Models about which he wrote...especially the Model 1885 Single-Shot Unfortunately, John Campbell regurgitated some of what old George wrote in his own two volume series on the Winchester Single-shot (which are for the most part, very informative, but not yet a complete & accurate work on the Model 1885). That is the primary reason why I am in the process of writing my own reference book about the Model 1885 (and its sibling, the Model 87 Winder Musket).
