BARNEY

Needle teeth in ball of fur
His feet could not agree
Which way to go or when to stop
Or when t’was time to flee.

The vet, she told me forty pounds
To give or take a few.
With sixty past and growing strong
I knew he’d missed a cue.

He topped the scale at ninety plus
And settled in just fine.
The cat and he set up a truce
I knew all would be fine.

A gorgeous coat of gold and black
His ears tipped down a bit
Soft brown eyes plumb full of love
And a smile that wouldn’t quit.

Through winter’s chill and summer’s heat
He did what dogs do best
On soft warm bed , or plum tree shade
He’d circle round, and rest.

Tis’ not in mind that time slips by
When taken day by day
Ignoring truth as life’s pace slows
And nature has her say.

But debts be paid and duty done
When hearts are not so sound
To very last his selfless love
Seemed measured by the pound.

With patient eyes he let ME go
Laid head upon my knee
His body worn and failing fast
I set his spirit free.

Fellas, meet my friend Barney.

Barney was a keeper.

Very sad...you have my condolences...sometimes its harder to lose a dog than a human relation. I love my dog more than any of my relations. Where else can so much love and loyalty be had for so little coin.

Clouder,

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Barney seems like a good friend. That level of loss is hard to take.

Barney lived a good life with you, of that I am sure. He passed where he wanted to be...and went to a better place.

RIP, Barney.

Remember him, and respect him by doing what he would want. He would want another dog to replace him and live with the same level of love and support you gave Barney. You gave him a good life, and he will never forget you. He would only be disappointed if you didn't get right back on that same horse...and ride.

A story, hopefully to help...

Back in '97 my ex-wife called me to tell me that Moxy, my champion matriarch Lab had passed. It snowed that night; I was 1200 miles away.

Grief stricken, roads covered in snow, I shuffled out a careful message. In the snow, I wrote (with my feet) in 50' tall letters the following:

"I LOVE YOU MOXY. I MISS YOU. I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU."

The message was over 200' long.

The next morning a news (traffic) helicopter flew over. They took a picture of that. The title read "Who's Moxy?" I wrote those words so someone would see it, hopefully Moxy.

In the morning snow plows came through and wiped it all away, but the story remained.

And, while Moxy can never be replaced, God gave me Shelby. Sometimes I think Shelby somehow just knows that wonderful old girl because she's the best dog anyone could ever ask for...and in some ways even better (no offense to Moxy...she would have wanted it that way).

I hope this makes sense.

RIP, Barney

Bob

Clouder - Sorry for your loss - Remember - Unconditional Love is all they ever know.... Keep his memories alive in your heart and speaking from experience - Another one can not replace him but another one sure helps make the sorrow and sadness easier to manage... There is a puppy out there some where wanting to give a new master his/her unconditional love....And speaking of a movie not a subject for review - I do believe - "All Dogs go to Heaven"....Mark

Condolences sent. But don't grieve too much. Dogs keep things pretty simple for themselves. Barney knows you loved him and gave him a good life. And he'd want you to go on and be happy.
