Thinking about building a boat, out of wood. Nothing major, 16 foot or so in length. Ive drafted plans for various designs. Anyhow.
Thinking about how I can seal/waterproof. Fiberglass is one obvious choice, any other -cheaper- options?

A wooden boat should leak until it swells. Like a wooden bucket.

Only fiberglass if you're repairing a 'too far gone' boat.

Or if you're taping a stitched seam.

I have built several from Spira Boats and always coat and fiberglass in epoxy. If it is worth building it is worth building right.

The "West" system is used by many wooden boat builders to seal plywood, its resin based sealer, and was once used on an America's Cup boat...

For some reason bed liner doesn't bond well to wood. A friend tried using it on the deck of his pontoon boat, and it didn't last two years.

What not to do. Use fiberglass materials not designed for boats.

My great grand father was a master at building flat bottom boats. All he used was wood and pitch. If done right, when ffirst built pitych the cracks and then the wood will seal by swelling. Some use pitch covered rope (cotton or sisel rope) in the cracks as caulking to seal cracks.

that's because west system is an EPOXY. There is almost nothing on the planet that epoxy can't handle. sealing a wooden hull with it, is nothing more than a walk in the park.

polyester resins (fiberglass) break down in UV light, epoxy does not.

Another +1 for the West System (Bay City Michigan).

I used their products in the construction of small racing hulls for years.

If you want to use planks instead of plywood, there are pressure treated/resin impregnated planks available.

Gopher wood and pitch works pretty well from what I understand.

West System is a popular brand of epoxy but there are epoxies out there as good and way cheaper. Here is where I buy my epoxy and I cannot tell the difference between this and the West System other than the price. Also you can buy fiberglass cheaper on this site.

DO NOT use any screws other than stainless or silicon bronze. Bronze is best but stainless will do if you are not planing to leave the boat in salt water.

Although always described as a cowboy, Roswellnative generally acts as a righter of wrongs or bodyguard of some sort, where he excels thanks to his resourcefulness and incredible gun prowesses.
