Just when I'd thought I'd heard it all . . . . .
I turned on the car radio this AM & they were broadcasting a warm & fuzzy about the '92 LA riots . . . causes, events since, etc. One of the first comments, from a mushbrain female, went something like this:
"I wasn't frightened by the riots, but then about a week later, I went to the gym." (At this point I expected to hear something about her being accosted or threatened. Uh, uh!) "It was terrifying to hear all these people talking about wanting to buy guns to protect themselves." Blabbity, blabbity.
My Gawd, can you imagine that? Someone wanted to protect themselves. The nerve of these people! Why would anyone want to do that? Much less, how dare they offend Ms. Tofu Princess by expressing such a barbaric idea in her presence?! For me, this is the archtypical example of all that is wrong with that intellectual vacuum on the Left Coast. will270, be real careful not to drink the water, man!

Iconoclast, you're right. There are a lot of people here who talk about fearing their gun-owning neighbors, because it's trendy to feel that way. Never mind the fact that 99% of these dumb@sses live in the nice parts of L.A. and have never been robbed, raped, assaulted, or shot at. Typical of the movement is the retro glasses-wearing, college graduate, Volkswagen Jetta-driving, nose-pierced, liberal urban female. There are a lot of them in Southern California. Males are definitely less opposed to gun ownership in general.
As for the L.A. riots, the media overlook the many Korean store owners in South Central who defended their establishments effectively with pistols and assault rifles (good for them!); people also forget that if Reginald Denny had been armed, he would have been able to defend himself from the mutilation he received.
Part of the problem is that L.A. has an ordinance against carrying any "dirk or dagger" even if it's openly carried. A dirk or dagger includes "any knife or instrument with or without a handguard capable of ready use as a stabbing weapon," so that includes swords, knives, bayonets, and folding knives when locked in position. Effectively, no dangerous weapons may be carried within the city, including knives with blades longer than 3 inches. Their reasoning is that you can pepper spray someone who's attacking you with an illegal sap/metal knuckle/shuriken/cane sword/billy/truncheon/sandbag/dagger/nunchaku/etc.
It's cool to be a fringe liberal here-- the type of people who don't believe in carrying weapons of any kind, and who believe it's more dangerous to carry a gun than not to carry a gun. The strange part is, the only other city with similar policies on weapons is San Francisco. Most other parts of California are rural or suburban, and the most they do is prohibit the discharge of firearms within city limits except in self-defense. Many cities and counties prohibit the carrying of knives over a certain length, however, and most parks prohibit the carrying of weapons of any kind.

Mr. Lobo, if I stepped on your personal toes, I guess I apologize. I realize there are some good folks in KA - even in the PR of Kennedy, although I would submit they are in danger of extinction there. However, the thought process represented by this mushbrain must hold sway in view of the low caliber of people elected to national and state-wide office from that area. I find nothing at all humorous about Boxer, Feinstein & Davis, to name only three.

You know that show on TLC? Trading Spaces? It's about peopel who redocorate each other's hoes and see if they like it. I think we should try that out only living for a week.
We'll ave a lot of advocates after that.
My gun is prettier than yours, and it's a Glock!

It has always facinated me how wealthy, educated individuals can be the most easily lead the wrong way in the gun control debate. It truly must be the "it doesn't happen in my neighborhood" mentality. SAD and SCARY
One of the most liberal minded Lawyers I know used to give me all kinds of crap about hunting, shooting and owning guns. After his office was broken into and then his house as the perps found his spare keys, his attitude changed. He now ownes a couple of guns and no longer gives me a hard time....Strange how that works....

I see a lot of them here (both the cars and the people I described), and it is their weak-mindedness that makes them fools, not their choice of auto. But for some reason the 1998 and later Jetta's-- high school graduation gifts, no doubt-- seem to be in the ownership of the retro-glasses, urban types. Surprise, surprise!
Why, whatever do you mean?
