Anyone use one for razors? Or finishing up an edge on a knife or tool?

I don't have a Razor Strop but do use an old wide leather cow hide belt to keep my carry knife razor sharp. It ain't fancy but works well.Hope to find a strop at a yard sale or somewhere for cheap one day.

I use an old one for finishing the edge on hunting knives. I learned the proper technique from the old barber who cut my hair when I was a kid.

I use a leather strop loaded with green polishing compound to finish the edge of my knives. Most of my knives with CPM154 and D2 steel will not have to see a stone for a few years. A knife with good steel and a proper heat treatment will hold an edge for a long time if not abused.

    Yes.
Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

I use one on every knife I use or sale. A quick strop and that edge is razor sharp. I made a strop I use with one side impregnated with course valve grinding compound and the smooth side impregnated with fine valve grinding compound.

My folks used my Grand fathers on me.
I think it got more use on my backside than it ever did as it was originally designed for.

But, I never got one that I didn't rightly deserve and remembered why I got it, sometimes. LOL.

Have one my Dad made back in the 50's, made out of a 2" heavy
leather belt mounted to a strip of oak board, he always kept it lightly
oiled, we used it to finish the edges of our propagating knives it made a well sharpened
    knife cut like a razor.,

    OK, so educate me...

Some say their strop is loaded with abrasive.

    Some say oil.

    All say it really works.

What should I do to get a strop, and which method (abrasive vs. oil) is best?

Located in the U.K., but a wealth of info _ see blue menu box > upper left.

    http://www.theinvisibleedge.co.uk/page12.html

Google > sharpen a straight razor = MANY sources of info.

As to strop - one side paste / one side oil is often preferred.

Ah yes, a razor strop. How can I forget. At 80 years old I still have scars on legs and buttox from a beating I took as a 10 year old from my aunt. It was either take the beating in silence or report her and go to an orphanage, causing my sister also to be orphaned.

My grandfather shaved with a straight-razor so he had a strop. I don't know what happened to it after he died.

One of my grandmother's could strop a razor with the best of barbers while grandpa was sitting in a typical four leg chair tilted back on two legs with the chair's weight resting one of her hips! She could make it pop several times in one shaving.
