Was watching this last night on the History Channel. They were talking about all of the prostitutes available in Cinncinatti in 1882/3. My wife wondered what they got paid for each "service". I said a nickle, with the madam/owner of the house getting 2-3 cents of that. Any ideas[;)][:p][}:)]

Madams or bartenders sold brothel tokens to keep the girls honest.

    Seriously?
I was thinking that these were the times that the wooden nickle came into being? I like those coins though..

Yep, seriously. Original tokens are very collectible, like poker chips.

Seeing the two bit price it brought an old joke to mind. Hope I can recall correctly

A guy goes to a red light house and asks the Madam the charges, she quoted five dollars. He said that is more than he has is there any other prices? She then quoted they had a three dollar rate, again he said it was more than he had. She kept quoting and he kept saying it was more than he had. Finally they got down to two bits, when he agreed the Madam opened a door and hollered---Hey Joe grease up the cats * we have another twenty five cent customer

I thought the "old days" were all straight laced and religious and all of today's "evil sin" was a result of TV. Guess not.

Spider, those are really great tokens. As a coin and token collecter I really appreciate seeing those. Are they dated, or do you know their apx. circulation times?

Actually it predates the use by the whores following General Hooker's army to at least the 1850s, but it was popularized by that..

So there you have it... Sex was popular in the 1860's! Imagine that![:D]

    Earl -

North and South may have had their differences but I believe it safe to say there was a consensus on things sexual. I'd bet on a totally different outcome at places such as Gettysburg and Bull Run had a more popular pursuit been available to the men.[:D]

    An entertaining eye opener.
I read whore houses wereeven popular in New york and Brooklyn's Coney Island as late as the 1880's.
Syphilis was widespread up to the 1940's and hearing Abe's wife went insane, suggests to me
Abe may have contracted it and spread the wealth.
I dunno about "light in the slippers"but I've heard he was into off color jokes and stories.
