Tree Planting

Any tree planters out there? I just finished planting 1700 Walnut and White Pine on some CRP land (God Bless the Government) now if they don't get eaten by deer, mowed off, stangled by grass, sprayed by acccident with Round-Up, I should add some more game habitat to Illinois' substandard acreage. I'm 51 and have tried to plant 200 - 300 every year since high school. So far about 30% have survived. Hope I don't bore people by talking about it, but I figure my fellow gun lovers would be more sympathetic than the usual citizens would be.

My wife and I are members of the Arbor Day Foundation. We regularly plant trees, order more every year. I haven't ever planted 1700 at once, but we put about 200 blue spruce trees in last year. This year I ordered a couple dozen assorted fruit trees and a rose bush.

I'd like to plant a few nice Maple trees, but I don't have any room left!

p.s. Watch out for guys carrying old military rifles, they shoot trees!

Say, good for you. A 30% survival rate may seem low but if you don't plant it's 0%! Keep up the good work.

I plant on a weekly bases. Mostly native plants of the south west or endagered species plants of the south west. I do plant some not so south west plants in my garden space. My pride and joy is my 5 graft apple tree. My 2 cents

Ya say walnut? In a hundred years there will be some happy stockmakers. In the meantime all us creatures get to enjoy just lookin' at 'em. Well done.

When I went to forestry school my buddies were jealous because I always could get a good piece of ASH. Keep on planting the walnut! Just got done taking a ride with my cousin, who is a practicing forester, through several PA Game Land clearcut sites that are nearly 100% regenerated naturally in black cherry.

Pack slow, fall stable, pull high, hit dead center.

i hope you are in southern ill. i try to plant some every year but as you say the deer are tough on them. the man next to our cabin planted 60 acres of white oak two years ago and i would be suprised if he still has 30% left. was quite a deal though the us dept of cons. sold him the trees for ten cents each, planted themandput herbicide down. the state then reimbursed him twenty five cents for each tree. carl

when we do tree plantings we use a product called soil moist. the product stores water then releases it at a rate that a tree can absorb
there are many brand names so just ask at any nursery supply , they can order it if they dont stock it. as for you deer problem a product called Red Hot Pepper Wax is what you need , spray it on the trees and the deer will not eat the seedlings JODY
