Very Sad and tht Truck driver will never haul a load again.EVER.
Sometimes when you hook a trailer, it feels like it is well hooked, but it isn't.
The only way to know for sure is to go under the trailer with a flashlight and make sure the kingpin is completely engaged. I do this, every time, but many drivers do not.
When a trailer becomes disconnected from the tractor, the brakes on the trailer lock up immediately. So even a heavy trailer is not going to get too far. On flat ground it probably would have stopped in 500 feet or so.
The truck driver and passenger will be undoubtedly deeply scarred by this tragedy for a looong time, bub.
Three years ago, one of our bulk Pepsi drivers was hit in his brand new rig head on by a suicidal(?), terminal motorist and it still bothers him to this day AND he did everything to avoid the contact.
Recently I posted on another Pepsi driver who was hit head on by a distracted driver.
Scott's a nice guy, father, sport coach and he's having to deal with the same thing and he did everything to avoid contact in difficult conditions.
