Man kills four during Alabama video store robbery; second fatal heist this week
By Associated Press, 5/16/2002 09:53
ANNISTON, Ala. (AP) Four young men, including two brothers browsing for videos, were shot and killed during a robbery at a Blockbuster store. It was the second fatal video store robbery in the area this week.
Two Blockbuster employees and the two customers were shot at close range in the back of the head about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, police said.
''I've been around a lot of crime scenes, but that was about as gruesome as I have ever seen,'' Police Chief Wayne Chandler said.
Employee Austin Joplin, 22, was found dead at the scene. Co-worker Douglas Neal, 27, died early Thursday at Regional Medical Center, coroner Bill Partridge said. Both men were found in an office area at the rear of the store.
Joseph Burch, about 21, and his brother Andrew, about 19, were found dead in a back aisle.
Witnesses told police a man around 20 years old with apparent acne scars and long blond hair was seen driving away in a 1980s-model Ford Mustang.
The description of both the man and car were similar to that given by witnesses to the holdup Monday at the Movie Gallery video store in Heflin, about 20 miles away, police said. A clerk was stabbed to death.
Relatives of the victims collapsed in grief as they approached the store after word of the Wednesday killings spread.
''The entire Blockbuster family is saddened by this tragic loss,'' company spokesman Randy Hargrove said. ''Our thoughts and prayers are with the families.''

Lake Palestine area man shot and killed
By Jennifer Stone
Police are still searching for the person responsible for the shooting death of a Lake Palestine man Wednesday night.
The incident occurred near Lake Palestine in the Parkside Shores Subdivision, which is located south of Chandler. The victim, 34-year-old Travis Hill of the Lake Palestine area, was shot around 10 p.m.
According to Henderson County Sheriff's Investigator Wick Gabbard, witnesses say Hill and another man had gotten into an argument a few weeks ago. At that time, they said, Hill threatened to kill the other man.
On Wednesday evening, Hill went looking for the man, whose name is not being released at this time, and found him in a home on Tall Pine Road.
"He just barged in the house, without an invitation, and started waving a sawed-off shotgun around," Gabbard said of Hill.
The other man reportedly jumped at Hill and a wrestling match ensued. The two fell to the floor, each trying to gain control of the shotgun.
According to witnesses, the gun went off and the shot hit the ceiling of the home. It is unclear who was responsible for squeezing the trigger. However, the gun was loaded only with bird shot, said Gabbard.
While Hill and the other man were still fighting, a third man came up behind the two and shot Hill with a "handgun of some sort."
Hill was declared dead at the scene from a single shot to the abdomen, said Gabbard.
The shooter, whose name is also not being released at this time, fled the scene and police had not located him as of this morning.
"It does look like it may be self defense, but it's hard to tell until we have all the details," said Gabbard. Many of the details, such as how many people witnessed the shooting and what kind of handgun was used, are still uncertain at this point.

PORTSMOUTH -- A Portsmouth man, who police said was being beaten by three men, turned a gun on one of his alleged attackers Monday and shot him in the head.
The man who fired the gun has not been charged with any crime. Police have not released his identity.
The men police described as his attackers, including the one who was shot, now face charges of assault.

Police also arrested Nathaniel Smith Jr., 47, of the 200 block of Outlaw St. in Chesapeake. He was charged with simple assault.
The man who was shot has not been identified and is in fair condition at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He will face charges upon his release, Dempsey added.
The three suspects began arguing with the man at about 12:51 p.m. in the 1100 block of Center Ave., and then, police said, started beating him.

Dog fight ends in shotgun blasts

CANTON, Ohio -- An all-out brawl of a dog fight turned deadly when a Canton man took matters into his own hands.
Paul Slentz's 9-year-old dog Boomer has typically been good about defending himself and defending his family.
"He's just a guard dog and he does his duty," Slentz says.
But this week, he's got only wounds to show for it. Pit bulls went running on a rampage, first fighting the neighbor's dog just footsteps away, then turning to Boomer as their target.
"We thought he was going to die on us," Slentz says.
It was a battle against time according to Slentz, with the male pit bull forcefully wrapping his jaw around the chow's leg. His female counterpart chasing Slentz's son into his truck.
Slentz tried to chase the pit bulls away with a broom, but it was the two gun shots that cost the bullying dogs their lives.
"I was afraid the dogs would attack my son," Slentz says. "I don't take any pleasure in shooting somebody's pets."
The owner of the pit bulls told the Stark County dog warden that someone stole the dogs from his property.
Since the dogs appeared to be a threat to the Slentz and his dog, his actions are protected under Ohio law.
Slentz's dog went through four hours of surgery but his recovery is going well.
