Pentagon Tells Congress It Will Cancel Crusader Gun

May 8, 2002 1:44 pm EST

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Defense Department notified Congress Wednesday that it will cancel the Army's next generation Crusader artillery gun program, Pentagon spokeswoman Victoria Clarke told Reuters.
Clarke said Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz called key members of the House and Senate during the day to inform them of the formal decision to scrap the controversial $11 billion program and instead develop more high-tech weaponry for the years ahead.

"He started calling them today to inform them of the decision to cancel," Clarke told Reuters ahead of an afternoon news conference by Wolfowitz and Army Secretary Thomas White to discuss the decision.
