Do you check oil with the dip stick screwed in or out?

On lawnmower, unscrew, wipe, just drop back in, don't screw.

This is the reason most dipsticks have 'safe' zones. That 1/4" or so of thread doesn't really matter.

If the engine has been sitting idle (off) overnight (or at least a few hours), you can simply read the dipstick after removing it without having to wipe it off. The oil will have settled to it's lowest level.

+1 with my pressure washer your screw back in, with my mortar mixer you just put it into where the threads meet

My riding lawn mower seems to always be oil hungry. I always check it every time I plan to use it and always have to add about 1\4 quart of oil.

It is 25 years old and has never failed me so the oil is no real bother.

It doesn't smoke and I really have no idea where all of that oil is going as it rests on a clean cement garage floor with no signs of leakage.

Was working one summer mowing lawns as a teen. The guy I was working for had this brand new honda mower he was so proud of.

One morning it seized up on him.

He checked the oil. All good.

    I got out the manual.

Ooops gotta check the oil with the cap unthreaded. Not enough oil in the engine according to mfg. specs.

    He was pretty pissed.

    And fiery auto crashes

    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

Back years ago my wife mowed the yard.
I bought her a new riding mower for her birthday.
    She actually enjoyed mowing.
She would not check the oil.
After replacing the motor 3 times over the years I took over mowing.
I check the oil level on all my small engines every time before I start it.
Some I check with the dip stick screwed in some not.
From Briggs and Stratton web site.

Locate the dipstick cap, usually in yellow or black and embossed with an oil indicator.

Remove the dipstick cap by turning counter-clockwise and then wipe it down with a clean rag to ensure an accurate reading.
Reinsert the dipstick by applying pressure and turning clockwise before removing it again and taking a reading. The oil level should be between the Full and Add indicators.

Thanks everybody as I think I have found out with Honda engines you check it screwed out and B & S engines you check it screwed in.

Many mowers and decades ago we were renting a house with a small yard and we had a hand-me-down old push mower. My wife was going to be a sport and cut the grass. She knew enough about engines to know oil was important.

She called me at work to inform me she was going to cut the grass but after taking the oil filter off and adding oil, the mower wouldn't start, "Did I have any suggestions?".

I told her that the mower didn't have an oil filter so we've got a situation, just push it to the shed and don't touch it again.

You guessed it, she removed the air filter and "topped it off". [:I][8]

I still don't know why mowers don't shut off when there is Low Oil! My honda water pump does. Seems it should be an easy thing to do.
