Glass from the past!

Here's one for the books, Last Thursday my daughter closes her locker at school with the heel of her hand. She feels a pain and by the time she reaches her classroom her hand is swelling and turning purple. My Bride is called and picks her up from school and takes her to the Doctors office. X-rays reveal two pieces of glass and what appears to be a needle (just the metal part, no hub) in her hand!
Two years ago, while cleaning her room she broke a picture frame, picked the glass up and placed it into her wastebasket. Later she tried to compress the contents of same wastebasket and guess what? Right, she punctured herself on the broken glass. So we take her to the minor emergency room and they sew her up. (Leaving the glass and needle behind.)
Yesterday, The little sprout spent 90 minutes in the operating room getting constantly X-rayed, probed and cut (4 incisions) and the only piece they could recover was the largest (triangular shaped 3/8" base 5/8" tall) from the heel of her hand. It had cut the joint and part of the tendon to the thumb probably when she closed her locker. Get this, it had traveled about 1 1/2" from the original injury site! The smaller piece of glass and needle were elusive and to probe more was to risk more damage. Dr. claims the other two foreign objects are basically imbedded in scar tissue and should not cause any problems.
Bottom line, glass is tough to see and locate in a cut. So if you or someone you are responsible for gets punctured with glass, insist on an X-ray, several shots from different angles to insure no glass is present before closing.

Ouch! Reminded me of a glass sliver I had about 2-3 years ago. Tried to get it out, didn't initaly because it was hard to see. Over the months at times with my hand turned in a particular position, I would feel a little internal prick. Not really painful, but really annoying.
Finally 'went to war' on it using head magnifiers, I could only "see" it from the end as a tiny dot. Side ways not at all.
Numbed the area with ice, wound up with a mini crater, but it was out.
No more annoying pricks! Glad.
She has many years ahead of her. Perhaps you might consider another "qualified" medical opinion, just for future happiness. Remember the story about the Princess who slept on the pea? She slept better without it.
Best wishes for her.
Happy Bullet Holes!
Thanks G&G and He Dog, the wraps have to stay on till Monday. Of course my little girl can't stand it and has worked back a portion for a peek. I had to walk away after comforting her. She seems to be able to take it a better than me! Must be that PARENT thing.
