And then we learned... That 40 would pull a string of 8n's and not even breath hard. A brush hog was a day in the park as long as the operator knew how to declutch the PTO. Otherwise one could take some unplanned travels. A 14" two bottom plow that made the Fords struggle was just routine field work.
My dad traded the 40 for a 950 in 1988. The 950 (Yanmar) was a good machine, but not in the class of the 40. Too light, too many levers in the wrong places, too hard to mount and dismount. Too bad JD forgot how to make small tractors.
