Cheney: Attacks Almost a 'Certainty'
Sun May 19, 3:41 PM ET
By KEN GUGGENHEIM, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) said Sunday he is almost certain that terrorists will attack the United States again. "It's not a matter of if, but when," he said.

Cheney also acknowledged past failures in responding to signs of terrorism, but said he does not know if the Sept. 11 attacks could have been prevented "even if we had all those pieces together."

The vice president, in two talk show appearances, confirmed that U.S. intelligence is picking up hints that Osama bin Laden (news - web sites)'s terrorist network may be planning an attack. The information is vague, but should be taken seriously, he said.

"I think that the prospects of a future attack on the U.S. are almost a certainty," Cheney said on "Fox News Sunday." "It could happen tomorrow, it could happen next week, it could happen next year, but they will keep trying. And we have to be prepared."

Cheney said he believes the United States has had success in disrupting the al-Qaida network, but it is impossible to prepare a perfect defense.

"You try to read the tea leaves. We look for pieces of information and evidence, but you never get the complete picture," Cheney said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

President Bush (news - web sites), returning Sunday to the White House from Camp David, did not respond to a question about whether Americans should be on a higher state of alert.

Dont know if this means anything specific. We've heard this song and dance before. But just in case, keep your powder dry and your bug-out bags ready, peeps.

The government should have been on alert far before 9-11, we have always been threatened.

Cheney's comments should come as no surprise to anyone with an IQ this side of absolute zero. We know there were what, 30,000 (?), trained in those camps. How many did we kill/capture in Afghanistan, maybe 2-3K (not Taliban, the other nationalities)? I don't know the exact figures, doubt anyone does, but bottom line is that there were & are far more of these vermin in circulation than we've accounted for to date. Doesn't take much technology to whip up some HE & dentonate it - hard to prevent, also, or there wouldn't be so many dead kids in Israel. And these bastids have shown they can be inventive. They spend a lot of time looking for cracks they can exploit, then act without mercy. How many contemplated, before Munich, the Olympics to be the target of political terrorists? And how many on 9-10 could predict the use of commercial airliners as kamikaze bombers? We need to think outside the box, also. And we need to take a page from the Mossad when we locate them.

I have some serious doubts about our government's ability, maybe
even their desire,to truly fight this "war on terrorism".

Every new attack will renew this government's resolve to fight the war on terrorism. Apparently, a number of plots have already been foiled, but with MSNBC now reporting that Al-Qaida is not the only group of nuts that wants to attack us (here or abroad), the likelihood of at least some low-level attacks, sooner or later, is very high. All it will take to keep the government, and the people, interested is (unfortunately) another hit. The silver lining is that such a hit will also continue to justify anything more we do to run these groups to ground.

It's all well and good to sit around chattering nervously and debating this and that, but I think we're all really waiting for another shoe to drop. I just hope it's not a very big shoe. Gentlemen, keep your powder dry...
