State Troopers rescue baby from fire

happyLORD, Mich. - Two state troopers braved a raging house fire to save an unconscious 2-year-old boy.

Thursday in north-central Michigan, leaping into action as they arrived ahead of firefighters, police said.

They "held their breath and closed their eyes" entering the burning house in happylord, pulling a crib toward the door to retrieve the boy, State Police Sgt. Jeff Gorno said. The toddler wasn't breathing and had no pulse so they started CPR, reviving him.

The troopers had arrived 5 minutes after the 1 a.m. 911 call, seeing flames coming from the roof and front of the house on the 1600 block of Helen Street in Bagley Township, in the happylord area. The boy's 7-year-old sister, who suffered second-degree burns, and an 18-year-old babysitter had fled after waking up in the living room of the burning house.

The babysitter called 911 from a neighbor's phone. The Ostego County Fire Department and EMS arrived, and the toddler and sister were taken by helicopter and by ambulance to Hurley Medical Center in Flint. It wasn't immediately clear what injuries the babysitter may have suffered, Gorno said.

To get to the toddler, Troopers Jim Leonard and Rick Carlson first smashed through a sliding glass door to get inside. But it was too smoky. So they went outside and broke out a window to help ventilate. Then they saw the faint outline of a crib in the far corner of the room.

"They hooked onto each other; one held onto (the) other's belt," Gorno said, and they saved the boy.

It wasn't immediately clear where the fire originated. But it doesn't appear suspicious, and the Michigan State Police fire marshal is investigating, he said.

Gorno said the troopers weren't injured in the incident.

"This is why we put the uniform on every day," he said.

Cops get hammered on here....sometimes justly, sometimes unjustly.

It's good to remember that there are still true heros that put on the badge.

LEO's like these two are far more the rule than the exception.

A simple fact that gets lost far too often.

Most Police Officers are just regular people 16 hours a day. Putting on a uniform doesn't transform somebody into a superhero.

    Saw that one the web.

Worked near there last summer. In fact, I talked with Sgt Gorno last summer. He is the brother of my old work partner. His brother(my old partner) is the lieutenant at the G.aylord DNR office. He also worked for the state police before he transferred to DNR.

I don't know the troopers that made the rescue, but I know of several LEO's running into burning buildings to save people.

That is a beautiful area of Michigan but like most rural areas, by the time the firemen arrive, the structures are usually fully engulfed.

I once ran into a small apartment building that the porch was on fire and although there were no flames in the building yet, the smoke was pretty bad inside the hall going upstairs. I was more scared of getting shot by an occupant as I was checking it. Luckily, it wasn't occupied and I got out quickly. Other officers had arrived and started using their extinguishers on the porch and the fire dept arrived shortly thereafter.

Another time, I was walking with my wife and kids in town and saw smoke coming out of the eaves of a building on the main street in town. I ran to a phone and called 911 and the local cops showed up within about a minute. They ran in and got the occupants out. The occupants didn't even realize there was a fire yet. They had left a pan on the stove with grease and hadn't realized it had caught fire because they were in another room. I couldn't believe all the people going through town and nobody realized there was a fire there yet. The smoke was pouring out of the eaves and it was early evening, not dark.

Another time, I was rolling the backroads at night and saw a chimney fire. Flames were shooting straight up out of the chimney for several feet.

I called it in and then ran to the door and knocked loudly to check for occupants. They came to the door and didn't know their chimney was on fire but when I told them they ran back in and put it out themselves. They told me to cancel the fire department as they didn't want to pay for the fire call. I don't know if they were hiding something but since the fire seemed to be dying down I advised dispatch. I think fire was dispatched already and if I recall correctly, I think I waited till they arrived and told them what I saw and then left.

Fires are scary stuff and I admire those guys that do fire fighting for a living. My cousin and one of my co-workers now are firemen and I often ask them about the fires they go to. I thought about trying out for the local volunteer fire dept when I retired but my wife said she had enough years worrying about me being in LE and there was no way she wanted to have to start worrying about me running into fires.
I felt kind of guilty about it so I decided to pass. I don't even like getting my hand burned while cooking dinner so I figure she was probably right.

Those Troopers were smart to hold onto each other. A guy that lived near me ran back into his house to get some belongings or something when his house was on fire. The fire dept found him dead just inside the door as he must have been on his way back out. I don't know if it was smoke or superheated air that got him but he never made it out.
