New York City starts program to pay $100 cash for guns turned in to police

The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) -- In the latest effort to get guns off the streets, city officials announced a "cash for guns" program that will pay people $100, no questions asked, if they turn in an operable firearm to police.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Tuesday that although major crime is down more than 7 percent over the past year, shootings have increased.

As of Sunday, there have been 498 shooting incidents citywide this year, compared with 407 in the same period last year, an increase of 22.3 percent.

The "cash for guns" program will run for 30 days but could be extended. People who turn in guns to police will remain anonymous and won't be questioned.

The guns will be exchanged for vouchers that can be redeemed for $100. The reward money is being funded by assets from state forfeitures.

Great! Where can I buy a bunch of cheap Jennings for $20 each?
And we all know that the drug dealers and gang bangers will turn in their guns.

someone posted a thread similar to this not long ago..they also said that there were a few people in some other state that had set up a table and were trying to buy the guns before people turned them in. Can you all imagine the great deals you can get on some nice pieces from the morons stupid enough to go along with this?

What the hell are they thinking when they walk up and turn their guns in...IMO they don't deserve to have them in the first place. If they can't think for themselves, they shouldn't be trusted to have them.

Well, considering you can buy Mosin Nagants and other old military rifles for $79 or less, I'd say ship 'em your inventory with an invoice attached.

You think its a coincidence that:

"Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Tuesday that although major crime is down more than 7 percent over the past year, shootings have increased."

You think maybe one is a direct result of the other?!?!

Sounds great. Anyone want to go in with me on a semi-load of Ravens? We can retire early. They said no questions asked, right?

Jeez.......can you mail them in? :)

I know where I can get quite a few crappy Jennings for $20-25......

Seriously though.....I should buy up a few hundred, and drive up there......

    lessee.............lets say I took 500 guns.

At $75 profit each, that would be $37,500!!!!! Woooooooooooo......

    Wow.....I should do this. :P

Merc (who wonders what laws there are against taking 500 guns to NYC!!!!!)

NO! You may not have my guns! Now go crawl back into your hole!
