Technically speaking the biggest I've shot is a .729 (.73 caliber); or more comonally known as a 12 ga slug. [8D]

The smallest would be the new .17HMR.

Got one, 45-120-3 1/4" Its not bad till you start shooting 500gr's out of it. But then, it weighs about 13 pounds.[:D]

I will take it over the .460 weatherby that I shot 3 rounds from. That thing was nasty!

No joke! after the first shot, "I think I need dental work". Second shot, "Why am I abusing myself?" After the third shot. "I confirmed I will never own one."

I have shot a .50 BMG and it was noting like the .460.

that is the truth, I swear I couldn't see in color after shooting for over a hour, I did it on a dare as a 17 yr old kid, at the time I was 6ft 2in and wheighed in at 115lbs, that thing spun me like a top[:D]
The 50bmg in a barrett 82a1a is a ice creamcat in comparison, I even had a guy from barrett tell me I was nuts for shooting the 460[:D]

12ga From Hell (see the posts by Ed Hubel on the reloading forum)
Fired it 6 times in a row.
Next down the recoil list was a 416Rigby.
    Handguns would be a 7mm-08 from a 15" Encore

Well, for a RIFLE, that would have been the M67 90mm Recoiless Rifle- fires a 6.75 POUND projectile at 700 fps. Yes, fired from the shoulder. Loaded with the anti-personnel (Flechette) round, becomes shotgun on steroids. Biggest anything fired from the shoulder was the M47 Dragon anti-armor guided missle. 140mm warhead. And yeah, ya REALLY want earplugs with either!

An M1 Rfile Grenade. It must have been an Anti-Tank grenade. It's most memorable characteristic when fired from the textbook standing position is the bone jarring rattle that shakes through your body from head to toe. Somewhat akin to sticking your finger into an empty light socket...and that's without taking into account the recoil. If you ever get the chance to fire one from the prone or standing position, don't! [:)]

Due to the violent recoil, it was recommend to be fired with the butt on the ground with the stock turned sideways to prevent broken stocks. Picture a bunch of old salts having fun famming prives in the battalion in other positions! [:D][:D][:D]

It depends from the shoulder 460 Weatherby or maybe 40mm grenade. From a bipod a Bolt action 20mm made by an buddy's buddy who builds them for the military. From a vehicle a Ma Deuce

    Handgun : .50AE in pistol - .454Casull in revolver
    Shotgun : 10 gauge
Rifle : .55Boyes AntiArmour (still processing the rifle through customs/LE) - It's going to be a good musk-ox rifle.
    I also love the .50-120

BP rifle (muzzleloader) : .75cal Brown Bess.

If I count military equipment - I've touched off several rounds (Illumination, Smoke and HE-rounds) from the SAAB Bofors Carl Gustaf - 84mm recoilless rifle.

.50 BMG, 12 ga slug, .50 AE in a handgun.

I forgot...I need to add the M-203 40 mm grenade launcher...and I did not even consider the LAAWS...I better think about this some more. Backblast area all clear!
