How can I (download and save videos)??

WarbirdsWarbirds Member Posts: 16,834 ✭✭✭✭
edited March 2007 in General Discussion
I would like to be able to go to a site like youtube.com, download a short video, and then add it into a powerpoint, or something like that. I will be fine once I can get a video off the internet and onto my harddrive. I'm sure just about everyone out there knows how to do this except me.

Please help if you can!

For example, I would like to download this video, and throw it into a powerpoint.

You can insert videos into powerpoint slides. You then have to move the movie or video to the same folder you have the powerpoint saved in. It will automatically find it when you open up the powerpoint. You just insert the video just like you would a picture.

As for downloading a video off of you tube, as far as I know you can't download from there.

Possible to get but you have to read the webpage source and manually grab the appropriate flash file.

Once that is done, I'm not sure if powerpoint can take flash video in or if you'd have to convert it to avi, wmv, mpeg, or some other form first.

SO once all that is done, you can start worrying about copyright laws :)

Ok you got the best browser for this!

    Step One:
Go to http://www.mozilla.com and download the latest version of Firefox Web Browser.

    Install > Load Mozilla Firefox

    Step Two:
Download one of the following Addons that will allow you to save the videos.

    UnPlug: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2254/

    GoogleVideo Downloader: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2838/

    GetVideo: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/3516/

    Download Helper: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/3006/

    VideoDownloader: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2390/

There are a few more out their but these are some of the smallest files that work the best.

    Step Three:
Install the Add-On and restart Firefox when it asks you too.

    Step Four:
Go to: www.allfg.org and find the video of your choice. Let the complete movie download then select the icon, text for the Addon you have just downloaded.

    Step Five:
Follow the on screen instructions to save your video.

    Extra:
Some videos may need to be converted from .flv to another format such as .avi. Just search in Google and you should get some decent results.

I prefer the download helper my self but I downloaded all of the add ons just in case. Enjoy![:D]

I have wanted to the the same thing. I just bought a video camera and was going to video the screen. I know I'll lose some of the quality but it should work.

    I'll have to try this.

SG_Niner, I'd heard that the firefox add-on didn't work as advertised or worked sporadically, or something. Do you know differently or have they fixed it?

I'm using IE now and don't want to change over to FireFox, IE is what we have at the station now and I don't care to have to use one at home and a different one at work, can I install FireFox and just use it to grab video's or will it cause problems with IE?

spurgemastur : heard about some bugs awhile ago they seem to have fixed them, I have no probalems!

Smokeeater 38 : you can have both browsers on your pc just use one at a time. You can also duplicate your IE favorite into firefox its real easy, but if you want to stick with IE I have the info for that also, just give me some time to locate it for you.

Smokeeater 38 - you can get versions of firefox that are setup to run completely from a USB memory stick/drive/thingie. Take it with you wherver you go, just plug it in and run it.

    iwannausername,

About 3 months ago the city's IT guy had us all stop using FireFox, he is the one that had us switch to it in the first place, and go back to IE7. I have finally gotten where I like IE7 and don't want to change again if I don't have to. If the only time I use FireFox is to download videos that is OK. My fear is that if I have to running it will cause a problem. Using the USB "thingie" might help that.

    Here's an online converter: http://media-convert.com/

It's free, and you don't download or install anything. Has worked well for me.

    SG_Niner,

I have been trying the downloads you listed and have gotten "Getvideo" to work well with Google but that is all. Some of the others will tell me the link to some news site video's and I can play them full screen but not download them.

If I download from YouTube it is as an ".flv" extension. And then when I try the Movavi Video Converter it says it is not a valid video file format or not supported.

I could use some help with getting the YouTube stuff to download and converting the ".flv", any ideas?

What you have said has helped me greatly so for I just need some more good advice.
