So a few years ago these babies were born with weak tracheas and poor prognosis for survival. Doctors used MRI to make 3D scans, then designed a dissolvable splint to hold open their tracheas. Printed them out using a 3D printer. The splints were surgically implanted.
Today there have been no complications. The splints are dissolving away as expected. The toddler's natural tracheas have had time to grow and achieve normal strength.
Pretty darned cool application of technology!
