Hey All - Why does GB have such strict policies regarding members contacting one another ? I watched an auction with interest, of a Hopkins and Allen parts gun, planning to contact the purchser and ask him if I could buy some parts. GB will not allow me to message him, why ? I see nothing wrong with this practice ... enlighten me

btw - Does anyone know user "genoeriq"

Its very simple: We do not allow this because we respect our users' right to privacy. Privacy to us means more than keeping your personal information secret; it also means keeping your inbox clean of unwanted junk mail.

Perhaps this did not occur to you, but maybe the buyer is not interested in whatever you are offering and does not want to be bothered by your unsolicited offer.

When the messaging system was more open and allowed any user to contact any other user, the feature was heavily abused. We got tired of dealing with all of the problems so we limited the ability of the facility to be abused. There were too many problems with bidders sending nasty notes to each other if they lost an auction, sellers spamming other sellers bidders with unsolicted offers, bidders being nasty to sellers if they did not win an auction, etc. There were also some problems with sellers telling bidders they won the auction when the bidder did not win it (i.e., Reserve not Met but the seller tells him he won anyhow).

If you ever bid on computer software on eBay you will likely get eight or ten emails from other eBay sellers or people who do not even list on eBay trying to sell you the same item. This is nothing but worthless spam and I for one get very tired of it. GunBroker.com does not allow people to spam you.

The current system does exactly what it is intended to do: facilitate auction transactions. Your attempted use has nothing to do with auction transactions and so it is not allowed by the messaging system.

Taz, Try posting it on the want-ads forum. From what I understand a lot of sellers go there to get rid of stuff they can't get rid of in auctions.

I have some experience with this, when I was new to internet auctions, I bid on a rare coin on E-bay, but did not meet the reserve, couple of days after the auction ended, the guy emails me, tells me he's going to let it go since I was close to the reserve...I didn't know better so I went for the deal, sent my money to a PO Box and everything. It was only after much argument, and me demonstrating that I had tracked down his home adress that the guy made good on the deal.
