Cat & Dog Food Recall Widened To Include One Brand Of Dry Food

Cat & Dog food recall Now Includes Dry Food - Yesterday, Hills, the makers of the popular "Science Diet" for dogs and cats recalled their "Prescription Diet" dry kibble food for cats.

The company says that the food is processed with wheat gluten supplied by a company that also provides wheat gluten to Menu Foods. It is not known whether any pet illnesses had been associated with the food at this time.

In a news conference on Friday, the Food and Drug Administration announced that its labs had detected melamine in samples of the pet food, in the wheat gluten used to make it.

Melamine is toxic only in very high doses and has been shown in rats to produce bladder tumors, according to the EPA.

"Hill's is taking this precautionary action because during a two-month period in early 2007, wheat gluten for this product was provided by a company that also supplied wheat gluten to Menu Foods," the company said in a statement on its website.

"U.S. Food and Drug Administration tests of wheat gluten samples from this period show the presence of a small amount of melamine." The recalled food represents less than 0.5 per cent of all Hill's products, the company said.

As a side note, this is the only Hill's product currently sold in the United States and Canada that contains wheat gluten from any supplier. No other Hill's Prescription Diet or Science Diet products are affected by this voluntary recall.

Nestle Purina said it was recalling all sizes and varieties of its Alpo Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food with specific date codes

Purina said the wheat gluten was used in "limited production" at only one of its 17 pet food manufacturing plants.

The recalled Purina products include: 13.2-ounce and 22-ounce ALPO Prime Cuts cans and 6-, 8-, 12- and 24-can ALPO Prime Cuts Variety Packs. They have four-digit code dates of 7037 through 7053, followed by the plant code 1159. Those codes follow a "Best Before Feb. 2009" date. This information should be checked on the bottom of the can or the top or side of the multi-pack cartons.

Purina's Mighty Dog pouch products, manufactured by Menu Foods, were previously withdrawn from the market as part of the Menu Foods recall. No Purina dry pet foods have been affected by either recall.

Hill's Science Diet Savory Cuts Feline canned cat foods, manufactured by Menu Foods, were previously withdrawn from the market as a precaution. This is the only Hill's product currently sold in the United States and Canada that contains wheat gluten from any supplier. No other Hill's Prescription Diet or Science Diet products are affected by this voluntary recall.

The recall does not include Prescription Diet m/d Feline canned food, which contains no wheat gluten. The affected products are as follows: Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food, 4 pound bag, 52742 42770(all lot numbers) and Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food, ten pound bag, 52742 42790.

The companies have advised consumers to stop using the product and return it for a full refund.
