Outdoor specialty Retailer Considers Texas Store
FORT WORTH, Texas - Following the move of its arch rival a few years ago, outdoor gear retailer Cabela's Inc. plans to open a huge store in Texas.
The company is seeking $40 million in tax breaks to build a 200,000-square-foot store in Fort Worth, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Tuesday.
The plan to open a store comes on the heels of plans by Cabela's to sell its stock to the public.
The family-owned business has grown from selling fishing lures by mail order starting in 1961 to become the nation's largest direct marketer of hunting, fishing, camping and other outdoor equipment. It has nine stores, mostly in the Midwest.
In entering the Texas market, Cabela's would be following the lead of Bass Pro Shops, which five years ago opened a store in Grapevine, 16 miles from Cabela's preferred site in Fort Worth.
In papers filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission this month, Cabela's said it expected to raise $230 million by selling stock to the public and would use the money to open new stores.

At my FFL's yesterday (picking up that Glock 19 [^]),
he was not happy about the tax break part! He's been in business twenty years and has a nice store for both fishing and hunting. First came the Academy chain (really after Wal*Mart), then the Bass Pro Shop, and now another out of state "big box", he's wondering out loud where "his" tax break was. Does have a point.
