ARNETT FIRED!

Thank God! Can't really believe NBC would pull the plug, but they did. Matt Lauer (sp?) read a statement on "Good Morning America" re-hashing what Arnett did on Iraqi TV, and then read a statement from the suits at the network saying he had been released by NBC and MSNBC, and that National Geographic had also released him. But the funny thing was, right after he read the statement, Matt said, "And now, live from Baghdad, is Peter Arnett...." And proceeded to talk to the scum-bag! Arnett was groveling like a whipped dog...hated the "firestorm" he had caused back home, yadda, yadda, yadda. Then good ol' Matt loved up to him, along with Katie. What buttheads! But at least Arnett is gone!

    Good riddance to bad rubbish.

But we will get another wave of statements from anti-war folks that this is an attack on freedom of speech.

I saw the interview Peter Arnett gave to Iraqi tv, and I thought he crossed the line. He said that the spirited Iraqi resistance had caused the American army to change its battle plan. He said that the original American plan had been thrown out, and a new plan now had to be made.
Now, what he said may be true. We won't know for months, if ever, if these allegations are true. But an American reporter should not be saying that on Iraqi tv. It gives aid and comfort to the enemy. If Arnett wanted to say those things off the record, off camera, to his Iraqi counterparts, fine. But not on world wide tv. I would have fired him too.

Thank god at least one network knows when to draw the line and pull the plug. I wonder what type of cushy severance package Baghdad Pete will be getting. Probably never have to work again.

I agree. Fox News demonized him pretty hard, and when I saw the video of his interview on Iraq TV was surprised that from the sound bite they showed, he wasn't quite as awful as they made him out to be. But the more I saw of the interview the less I could justify. I think they made the right call -- not the safe call, or the politically correct, commercial call -- but the right call. Whatever Arnett's reasons for moving over to MSNBC from CNN (makes you wonder?), and however benign he seemed to be in the first week of the war, reporting from Baghdad even after CNN's Robertson was ejected from the country, Arnett acts like a "man without a country."

He and Scott Ritter both seem brainwashed by these abusers, gassers and decapitators in a very strange way. It makes you wonder if they don't both have big oil-funded Swiss bank accounts. Meanwhile, Geraldo is accusing NBC and Arnett of jealously trying to stab him in the back, since he is now further into Iraq than he has ever been while they were falsely reporting he had been ejected, and he only just heard the false rumors.

NBC Severs Relationship With Peter Arnett
Arnett Was Covering War From Baghdad

    POSTED: 7:54 a.m. EST March 31, 2003
    UPDATED: 10:24 a.m. EST March 31, 2003

Journalist Peter Arnett will no longer report for NBC News and MSNBC because of remarks he made on state-run Iraqi TV.

NBC on Monday retracted its defense of Arnett.

    2074835_200X150.jpg
Arnett (pictured, above) went on state-run Iraqi TV on Sunday and said in an interview that the first American-led war plan has failed and U.S. strategists are now trying to "write another war plan."

Arnett was covering the war from Baghdad for NBC and its cable stations.

NBC News President Neal Shapiro spoke with Arnett via telephone early Monday morning in an attempt to fully understand the circumstances of Arnett's interview on Iraqi TV. After their discussion, NBC News issued the following statement:

"It was wrong for Mr. Arnett to grant an interview to state-controlled Iraqi TV -- especially at a time of war -- and it was wrong for him to discuss his personal observations and opinions in that interview. Therefore, Peter Arnett will no longer be reporting for NBC News and MSNBC."

NBC said Monday he wouldn't be reporting for "National Geographic Explorer," either.

Arnett told an Iraqi interviewer that the first war plan failed because it misjudged the Iraqi resistance and determination.

Arnett said the U.S. is reappraising the battlefield and delaying the war for up to a week while writing another plan.

The interview was broadcast in English and translated by an Iraqi anchor wearing a military uniform. NBC said Arnett agreed to an interview after attending an Iraqi briefing. NBC also said that Arnett's reporting has been "outstanding" and that he was simply offering an analytical answer to a reporter's question.

On NBC's "Today" show, Arnett said he was sorry for the statement, but added, "I said over the weekend what we all know about the war."

He also said he wanted to apologize to the American people for "clearly making a misjudgment" and said he would leave Baghdad.

NBC had earlier defended Arnett, saying the interview was a professional courtesy and that his remarks were analytical.

Arnett drew criticism while covering the Gulf War for CNN from the first Bush administration, which suggested he was conveying Iraqi propaganda.

You know I can't help but jump into a post like this. Normally I would defend Pete because he does generally provide good media coverage where others can't get it. But I have to agree with you extreme right-wingers this time.

The entire episode seemed a bit self serving. Appearing on Iraq TV bought him points with the current leadership and his comments, while I still believe in that little thing called the first amendment, were completely one sided and I know someone with his contacts has to have received equal feedback from the other side. Frankly I am a bit shocked. I used to have a great deal of respect for the man because he put himself out there to get info from the inside, but this was just too much.

I got a new shadow. I had to get rid of the other one... It wasn't doing what I was doing.

Arnett was fired a while back from CNN, and he admitted that he has carried a grudge against Ted Turner ever since. When CNN was kicked out of Baghdad recently Arnett was quoted as saying, "CNN has been kicked out, and I am still here."

Ditto, Fox is #1. Kudos to MSNBC and even NBC for ousting Peter A. Suggestion about Fox, though: I love Bill O'Reilly's views. But one wishes Fox would hire Joan Rivers or Bea Arthur to sit on camera by Bill every night. Then, when he gets manic about interrupting guests, she could slap his hand and coo, "Wait your turn, dear."

After posting the above, heard from a friend that Arnett was fired during the Vietnam Unpleasantness for reporting falsely that our troops had used gas warfare on our own men. And he was also fired by CNN during the Gulf War. So. Coincidence? Low learning curve?

NickCWinter...He was fired by CNN for druming up the false story about the Vietnam war. It is true it was about the Vietnam war, just way after it ended. Something to do with our troops using poison gas to kill supposed American traitors, I think. It was all proved false, and several folks at CNN got the axe over it.

Arnett is the same class as Jane Fonda. For some reason they hate the American Military.

Arnett reported a story named "Tailwind" where gas was supposedly used to kill USGI's that were AWOL in a Vietnamese camp. A big lie. An associate of mine was depicted as a "Sniper" at the scene. He was indeed a Sniper in Vietnam but never at that scene! He was successful in suing Arnett and the broadcasting company. And Arnett lost his job. So I was surprised to hear that a US news company hired his sorry butt for this war.

I say offer him to France......

Well, he has resurfaced with the London Daily Mirror. And guess what the SOB did? Backed WAY-OFF his earlier insincere apology on NBC! What a freaking pig! Where is he from? If the US, I say revoke his passport and let him stay in Iraq if he loves Saddam so much!
