What do you think? thinking about buying one locally. What are they worth? is .308 a good caliber for that model?

What's to think about? The 99 is an excellent rifle and the 308 is an excellent caliber.

I have a golden oldie in an obsolete caliber but I think it's cool.

The 308 Winchester was a popular caliber in the 99. I think that's what he's looking at. The 300 Savage is comparable. The 303 Savage like mine is more like the 30-30.

The older ones made in the 50s and before are a work of art.

Handiest saddle gun that can be easily scoped ever made.
You will enjoy it as long as you don't try to make it something it's not.

it depends on what model of savage 99 your looking at as to where the price should be. there are few things to be aware of , matching numbers, the famous tang crack in the butt stock, if the gun has been changed from original it will likely be over priced , be aware, 0n the other aspect of it all is that the 308 will be enough caliber for just about any hunting to be done, and the 99s are a pleasure to play with , I know I have a few more than a lot of different models of the 99 and enjoy all of them, they are a working piece of art

The savage 99 in 308 is an excellent rifle. One of the best lever guns ever made, in my humble opinion. Oakie

The rifle just says Model 99, all wood and metal is in excellent condition, manufactured in the 50s. He is asking $650. I don't know if that is a good price or not but it looks better than many of the newer ones I've seen.

Sounds like a very fair price if there are no extra holes and in excellent original condition.

It also has a Weaver K2.5 60-B scope with Post reticle and Weaver rings.
All are in excellent original condition.

The .308 is probably the most sensible 99 chambering to own.
While the .300 savage is nearly equal ballistically, ammo is becoming harder to find.
1950s manufacture were still high quality guns.
I'm willing to bet you'll want another, and another, and another,,,,,,,
    Arrivederci gigi

With the scope he is pretty much in line retail on it. See if he will move a little cheaper and buy it.

1957 is when savage added the 308 to the 99 they had to lengthen the action some to accommodate the 308

My research shows that the .308 was introduced in 1955. What did I miss.
This one was manufactured in 1956.
