I was reading an article about how people (mostly blacks) didn't like the Martin Luther King memorial cause the quote made him seem arrogant, then I ran across this.....

WASHINGTON -- A spokesman for the National Park Service wants to make sure everyone knows that it was not their decision to have the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial made in China by a Chinese sculptor.
"The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Foundation and not at all the National Park Service is the one that selected the architect and selected the sculptor," National Park Service spokesman Bill Line told 630 WMAL News.
The memorial on the National Mall, which is being previewed this week in a 'soft' opening before its official dedication, is made from Chinese 'red' granite by sculptor Lei Yixin. It was transported by ship for final assembly in Washington, D.C.
The memorial will be the first major memorial on the Mall for a non-president and African American. The official dedication of the King Memorial will be Aug. 28, the 48th anniversary of King's "I Have a Dream" speech at the 1963 March on Washington.
The selection of Lie was criticized by human rights activist Harry Wu who complained that Lei had sculpted Mao Zedong. There were also accusations that the decision was based on money, since the Chinese government would make a $25 million donation to help meet projected shortfall in donations.
Memorial foundation president Harry Johnson said the final selection was made by a mostly African American design team and was based solely on artistic ability. The National Park Service wanted the memorial constructed of granite and not marble since granite weathers better and Lie is one of the few artists in the world with expertise in fashioning large sculptures from granite.
The soft opening will begin at 11 a.m. Monday morning and was originally only going to be for D.C. residents with approved tickets. But there was so much interest that D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray announced that no tickets will be required and that anyone may attend.

Poet and author Maya Angelou is taking issue with a paraphrased quotation from Martin Luther King Jr. inscribed in his new memorial in Washington, saying the shortened version makes the civil rights leader sound like an "arrogant twit" because it's out of context.
