S&W or Colt

If you were going to choose between one of two handguns, both 4" barrels, for wearing in the backcountry where you might (rarely) encounter mountain lion or small, black bear, which of the following would you choose?

S&W model 27, .357
Colt Anaconda .44

The one you can shoot the most accuratly.
    I've said before,if you can put a .22 in
an eye at 10 feet and can't hit a truck
with a .50smith what good is it?

The Anaconda, hands down....but with a 6" barrel.....

I've shot both calibers, and curse the day I parted with a Redhawk because I thought I didn't need that kind of firepower.

Few months later a local horse trainer wants me to accompany her on a several day ride into the back-country (looking for SASQUATCH[:D]).

Sure, a .45ACP is O.K., but nothing can beat a .44 mag revolver.

I would pick the Colt too.

A .44 Mag or better, regardless of who makes it, but I agree with the 6" or longer barrel.

    Thanks all.

The 6" Anaconda would be nice, but I just saw one of the 4-inchers and they look pretty nice. A bit pricey though.

That's kind of a strange comparison. Put a Smith & Wesson .44 mag up against the .44 mag Colt and see which way the voting goes.

    Lowrider,
The reason I asked was because I already have the M27, but liked the look and feel of the Anaconda. Just trying to justify in my mind.

But since you asked, how about a S&W M629 with a 3" barrel compared to the Anaconda? Saw one of those too and looked like a nice little pocket rocket.

I have three 629's, and the shorter the barrel, the more the recoil is felt. I would pick the S&W 29 or 629 hands down over anyone elses wheel gun, but regardless of the maker, I want a 6" minimum barrel if I'm carring it as a backup hunting or hiking gun, and as I said in my previous post, the .44 Mag is the minimum. If I need a backup side arm for large bear country, it would be the .50 S&W Mag.!

Yup, those 3-inch 629s are pretty neat cannons. I own a 629 Mountain Gun, 4-inch, and I really like it now that I've finally found a grip that takes a little of the kick out of shooting it. With the factory Hogue monogrip (rubber) it felt like somebody hitting me in the palm with a ball bat everytime I pulled the trigger.

So if I go with either 44, should I use Garrett 310 gr Hammerheads or
    Cor-Bon 320 gr HC?

I really don't know. I'm not a hunter. I carry Federal or Remington 185gr JHP in my Mountain Gun. For two-legged animals that's about the baddest .44 mag round you can buy. 185gr. slug at 1650fps. Pretty serious.

I finally settled on the Eagle Heritage grips. Funny that a wooden grip would be more recoil-absorbing than a rubber one but the extra width across the back of the grip really makes a difference.

The Smith is the better firearm, but the .44 is the better caliber.

Unless it's the .44 Special, and I don't think Colt made the Anaconda in .44 Special. If it is a .44 Special, the Smith .357 is the preferred weapon.

Also, although both are large frame weapons, the Smith is a bit easier to carry.

Also, I believe the Anaconda is no longer produced, so parts and service may get difficult, as time goes by.
