Over/Under shotgun question

dreherdreher Member Posts: 8,786 ✭✭✭✭
edited July 2018 in General Discussion
I'm not really a serious shotgun person. My shotgun interests pretty much begin and stop with my 870. What I know about stack barrels is pretty much zero. I've handled a few over the years but have never shot one.

So today my newly married daughter tells me she needs me to find a over/under shotgun for her new husbands Christmas present. (Do I know how to raise them right or what!!!!![:D])

Mark will primarily use this shotgun for trap, sporting clays with the occasional hunting trip thrown. So what is the best gun on the market for under a thousand dollars?? Preferably a couple of hundred under a thousand. My first thought was a Ruger or a Weatherby. Your thoughts??

CZ is nice but you can look for a nice used Ithaca SKB or a browning/winchester. Those were all made in Japan under Mirikou(sp) and are solid shotguns.

I would look for a gun with ejectors, 3in chambers and a 28" barrel. Screw in chokes are nice but they can be retro fitted. I would want a 12ga with a long length of pull so it can be fitted later on.

The Browning will last several lifetimes.

    Fit, finish, and value.

12 gauge is typically the cheapest O/U.
I think an older Browning Superposed 12 gauge is a very undervalued shotgun in my opinion. There are some great deals on the Superposed 12s.......

Another vote for a used Browning with screw in chokes and never look back.

Weatherby and CZ don't make shotguns. The ones CZ sells are made by Huglu in Turkey, and the only Turk shotgun I would own. Huglu like CZ, actually has real quality control.
Weatherby uses two? suppliers. One was a failed experiment in Turkey. The other one that makes their quality DEA line of O/U's and SxS's, is Stefano Fausti in Italy.
Fausti makes a high quality shotgun, I've have two that I got used here on the auctions for a fraction of what Weatherby now charges. Search the auction side for "Fausti Field II" or "Traditions Field II", Traditions were the first importers.
In her price range, Stoeger and Mossberg are going to come up. More Turk contract guns.
Older Charles Daley branded guns can be a steal if you know what you're looking at, but most of their new stuff is Turk contract too. Older ones are Belgian Browning Superposed, Miroku Browning Citori's, and I think? some Winchester 101's.

In that price range, The Franchi would be my choice.

You get an Italian made O/U shotgun for under a grand with nice wood.

I have never shot one, but I have looked them over. The quality is better than the Turkish guns that I have held and looked over.

If anyway possible, spend the extra money and buy the Browning Citori.

For new guns the CZ Redhead and the Weatherby Orion both sell for under $900. 28" or 26" barrels 3" chambers, selective ejectors, choke tubes. Both of these are made in Turkey and are price point made. However they are not a cut rate price point and seem to be good shotguns with decent fit and finish.

The CZ Red head is not being made any longer, changed to a different model, but are still in stock. The new model is labeled different and has a higher price.

I bought one of my sons a new Franchi O/U for his 18th birthday. That was 10 years ago. It's a decent shotgun, it's not a Beretta but it is decent. It requires frequent oiling to keep running.

If you shop around you can buy a used Beretta or Browning that takes choke tubes in your price range. There are other Italian made O/U shotguns that can be had in that price range and are good buys if you know what you are buying.

The 2 brands you can generally buy used in that price range that you can depend on are Browning and Beretta. If you find a good buy on a gun, choke tubes can be bought as they are plentiful. Though I did buy a used 20ga Browning Citori with a chamber issue that showed up when I ran high brass shells through it ( fired low brass when checking it out).

If you scour the auction side on here there are good buys that come up. Look regular.

If he would prefer a gun that doesn't eject, as some trap and skeet shooter do, they sell for less than ejector guns.

Here are a few I would be looking at if I was looking for a 12 gauge over and under.

I feel both of these choices are 10 times the gun compared to most of the currently made Turkish guns offered. These have probably 2-3 lifetimes left in them.
    Plus, I'm "old school"![;)]
These are well balanced, light, fast, well made, pretty, and they have ejectors.

    Beretta Bl-4
Probably from the 70's. Looks like a lot of life left!
I have the identical gun in 20 gauge and it shoots like a dream.

Browning Superposed. There is nothing like a Belgium made Superposed. Plus, I feel 12 gauge Superposed's are very undervalued! A 410 or 28 ga will go for 4-6 times the 12 ga! and a 20ga 2-3 times!

Older Franchi shotguns (made by Franchi not Beretta) can be a very good value. Mine (Silver King) patterns beautifully, but has been tinkered with by Briley.

With shotguns fit is the most important thing, with a good superposed it should not be any off the shelf shotgun, it should be properly fitted, which means a surprise present is not the best plan.

Something else to consider is, will he be using steel shot at anytime, like when waterfowl hunting. If so the gun has to be able to handle it. Some of the older guns have issues in that regard. I'm sure someone here can help with that, what will and what won't.

"shotgun for trap, sporting clays with the occasional hunting trip thrown."
No way can a person choose a shotgun that will do ALL those tasks for someone else. A hunting shotgun may(?) work for informal trap/sporting clays but if the new SIL is really involved(probably not or he'd already have a selection of shotguns)in the shotgun games, he won't be happy with a hunting gun and a trap gun is stocked differently vs a SC gun.

I use my Remington 3200 for all shooting and have no problems. Trap, skeet, sporting clays, even hunting.

Yes, for the occasional hunt. You have to have deep pockets to hunt with that regular.

Here is the current list of 12ga O/U, used, no reserve. That way you can get an idea what is in the price range, max $1000. IMO There are some good buys on the list.

    https://www.GunBroker.com/Over-Under-Shotguns/search?PageSize=24&Sort=13&View=1&g=300002&MaxPrice=1000.00&NoReserve=1&Condition=4

14 pages. Nice older SKB on the first page. Some Brownings and a Berettas in the mix.

This one may go over a grand but it's nice.

"Mark will primarily use this shotgun for trap, sporting clays with the occasional hunting trip thrown."

It did not appear he would be hunting regularly.

I would prefer that someone else not choose a shotgun for me unless I advise them specifically. Give him the thousand bucks to buy what he chooses. She probably wants to give him a new, not a used shotgun though. We are talking about a $2000+ Citori new, and $1400+ used. If you have to get a new gun, A CZ fits the price range, and I don't know who makes them but the Stevens looks nice to me and comes in 12, 20, 28 and .410, under $700.

The Savage has extractors not ejectors. But if he primarily target shoots that is preferred by most trap and skeet shooters. The Savage is supposed to be a nice shotgun for the money. IIRC AQH has one.

Does he plan to bird hunt with it? Waterfowl perhaps?
I'd go with a Beretta or Benelli. With some looking you can get under 1000.
Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain
