Hunting "out west" HELP

Ok, Here is the deal. I have been a hunter in Pennsylvania, Virginia and N. Carolina for the past nearly 30 years. I now have the time to expand my hunting horizons.

I would like to hunt some of the larger game animals out west. Things like Elk, Deer of course, maybe Bears, etc. Maybe even pop a few prairie dogs.

Anyone have suggestions on where I should go? Should I use an outfitter? License info? Is there anytime of year that is better than others? Anything would be helpful.

I would like to make my first trip in the fall of 2006.

From my personal experience, in Wyoming it is free, no license required for prarie dogs, or coyotes and jack rabbits for that matter. The only bigger game prices that I know, are antelope--200.00 for a buck, 50.00--for a doe. Elk is somewhere around 500.00. For any kind of big game hunting in WY, you have to get drawn for the tag. And yes, unless you have a buddy out there be careful where you go, or get an outfitter.

If you want to break into "out west" hunting, pronghorn hunting is by far the cheapest and easiest hunting. It's usually fairly warm and dry and may not involve too much physical exertion. If you have a decent deer rifle and normal hunting equipment, you're all set.
