What next, gun control laws for canines?

Grinnell, Ia. - A Tama man was injured Saturday - the opening day of pheasant-hunting season - when hunting dogs stepped on his gun.

Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources say 37-year-old James Harris was pheasant hunting with a group about three miles north of Grinnell when the accident happened.

Officials say the group had shot a bird and when Harris went to retrieve it, he put his gun on the ground and crossed a fence. As he crossed the fence, hunting dogs stepped on his gun and caused it to fire.

Harris was shot in the lower left leg.

He was treated at Grinnell Medical Center and later transferred by helicopter to University Hospitals in Iowa City.

    Knew a guy who got several toes blown off when he laid his shotgun down to take a bird from his dog. Another dog stepped on the gun and it blew several toes off.[B)]

    Further on in the article it stated that No citation was issued. so were they actually considering citing the dog for unsafe discharge of a firearm? If he was given jail time, would his cell differ from his regular kennel?

    The gun was about 3 feet away from his leg.

    "The muzzle velocity is so great that the pellets don't have a chance to spread out," he said.

    No one else was hurt, and the dog was not injured.

    Foster said no citations have been issued.
