Drinking

I have a few good reasons for drinking,
and one has just entered my head,
if a man can't drink while he's living,
how the hell can he drink when he's dead?

Reading that other post about bourbon and Coke got me thinking about something I've noticed. I think my generation drinks a whole lot less than my parents' generation, and drinks almost no hard liquor.

My dad had a Manhattan everyday after work, and often two. My parents then had wine at dinner (mom had a glass while making dinner), and my mom would usually have some brandy before turning in for the night. At dinner parties, all the men AND women would drink cocktails.

When I go to parties at my friends' homes, beer and wine are served. A few people have liquor cabinet I can raid for some bourbon, but most don't. In fact, I sometimes bring along a bottle as a hostess gift. "Hey, mind if I crack that open?" Once one of the women, as I was leaving, asked it I wanted to take it with me. I laughed and told her it was a gift and she can keep it, and she looked at me all confused and said, "But how do I store it? It won't fit in the fridge."

I would say on average my parents and their friends consumed around 3 or four drinks a day. I'll have a few on the weekend, but nothing like that day in and day out.

Do you guys see that? Is it a generation thing, that younger people don't drink liquor anymore? Do people drink a lot less now?

    Reasons for drinking had many
and not just to make it seem right
but as my head clears I'm thinking
maybe I just wasn't too bright.

"I feel sorry for people who don't drink.
They wake up every morning knowing that is the best they are going to feel for the rest of the day."
I heard it attributed to Lyndon Johnson, don't know how true that is.

In Heaven there is no beer
    (No beer?!)
That's why we drink it here
And when we're all gone from here
Our friends will be drinking all the beer.

In Heaven there is no wine
    (No wine?!)
So we drink till we feel fine
And when we leave this all behind
Our friends will be drinking all the wine.

In Heaven there is no fear
    (No fear)
So we worry too much here
And we drink ourselves full of beer
To help us when we deal with the fear.

In Heaven there are no drugs
That's why we hang with thugs
And when the Lord pulls the plug
All the thugs will still be selling drugs, yeah.

    Thugs and drugs
    Beer...

In Heaven there is no sex
    (Oh no!)
    So let's do that next
And when our muscles no longer flex
Someone else will be having sex.

In Heaven there are no wars
    Or cars, or movie stars
And when we no longer are
The world will probably still be having wars.

    What the heck! Yeah!

    Sex and war,
    Bars and cars.
    Drugs, thugs,
    And delicious food.
