New coffee pot

I have yet to make a good cup of coffee with it. It's a 10 cup stove top percolator. My old one was a 5 cup electric percolator, so I just doubled everything, water and grounds, but the coffee comes out smelling and tasting like wet cigarette butts. What am I doing wrong. Am I using too high of heat and scorching the coffee?

turn the lights on. where's your ashtray??
Coffee mug, ash tray. I keep getting those two confused. They need to put clearer labels on these things.
The best ones are used, like one gets at a garage sale.
Extraction is a gentle art. I am guessing you are using a coarse ground [a must have].
Use the same coffee measure, plus one for the pot.
I let my coffee water sit out in a jug to allow clorine to evaporate out. [Are you on a well?]
Just enough heat to get the water bubbling gently into the glass viewport.
Then maybe twelve minutes. When it smells done, it is done.
I recall it usually took me twenty-two minutes to make a ten-cup pot.
I'm using a Techno-Brew these days, a gift from a coffee-shop owner [and client].
We have discussed coffee many many times. 190 degree water is what it should be when it is gently bubbling. The quality of the water is equally important.
Maybe our resident Coffee Doctor, Polite Psycho, will chime in.
Well thats what ya get when ya use the old ladies panties for a filter!!![:D]
I use percolators, no filters, just the basket.
That fridge water might be the problem.
Water can get funky in a chilled anaerobic environment, too.
Remember Legionaries Disease?
Any chance you are trying to brew straight chickory?
We have been using a French press, fresh ground beans and boiling water.
Like cowboy coffee.
Considered that maybe you are comin down wiht something and your sense of smell and taste is just off due to that?
Maybe you need to stop ordering coffee with Marlboro Miles [;)]
On the rare occasion I smoke, I smoke Camels.
...Either way, take and dump a few tblspns of baking soda in the pot (w/the basket in) and heat it up all the way, dump and rinse well...may help if it is the pot and not your method or you...[;)]
...used plenty of aluminum ones though and never had that problem cat, hmmmm.
...might try leaving the basket out, make the coffee, and then put an eggs worth of course (dont grind into little shell pcs.)egg shells straight into the pot once the coffee boils...the egg shells will cause the grounds to sink to the bottom...then just gently pour you coffee (grounds stay in the bottom of the pot) ...if this, or the soda "bath" does not remedy the situation....if none of that works...you got me dude!
...if all that fails, ask mongo (Jake) [8D]
This mystry may require closer examination!

Best hot cup of coffee I have had.
Pretty good cold cup of coffee also.
Jeff
Coffee can sour much like soybeans. Smells like hot stuff?
More like wet cigarettes.
Wet cardboard taste is typical for low end coffee.
Start with GOOD COFFEE!
IE start with actual BEANS, then GRIND them. . .
