Amazingly the British had some 18" guns on some ships during WWI.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BL_18_inch_Mk_I_naval_gun
These were even bigger on the ''big Mo''..50 cal guns ve 45 o the Bama.. those 5 extra calibers gave the lowa class an extra 400fps velocity and 5 miles more range..
The Bamas were called guns ..Big Mo's were called ''rifles'' due o the extra length..
ln the END... "Size matters"[^]

Yea but easier to spot on the shelf. [:D]
Another fact brought out in the article was that the assemblies were shipped with stove bolts instead of steel rivets. The Navy had to re forge metric rivets in France to complete the guns.
Many years ago, G&A had an article about Admiral Plunkett's Railway Navy during WW1. He used 14" Tubes because the 16" one were new & in short supply. IIRC, they shot so far & were in the air so long that the targeting had to actually take into account the rotation of the Earth.

Navy's Minute of Angle Rifles.(50 cal Iowa class guns) I believe it was written by Gary James. He always got the good stuff ! ... also did the .45 ACP Luger.

That model could put 70,000 lbs. of bombs on target within 15 seconds. From first impact to last a three plane cell of these could completely take out an area ~.5 x ~1.5 miles within this amount of time.
That's the equivalent of 77 rounds from this ship in less time than it took to read this. [:0]
Mighty Mo, Big Whisky, What is the nickname of the Alabama?[?]
