    it depends really.

i clean my guns immediately after a range trip, or at most the next day. that might be a few rounds in one gun and a few boxes in another.

barrel break in is largely bs, so i dont follow any sort of shoot xx rounds, clean, shoot xx rounds, clean procedure.

i'll clean a gun mid session if it fouls to the point that it malfunctions. some guns and/ammo are dirty and need this. most arent.

    so in short, it depends...

The guns I use for 3-gun matches get cleaned about once every 4 outings. That means for handgun about 500 to 600 rds. For rifle about 400 rds and shotgun about 300+ rds.

If Iam putting a gun away for an extended period it gets cleaned no matter how many rds its has fired.

I clean the bore after every time I shoot the piece. I also shoot a lot of corrosive ammo, so I clean those bores three days in a row.

I never clean my guns until I have shot at least one round. [8D]

To be honest different guns different round count. My Remington 512 needs a brush ran down it after about 40 rounds. I say this because after 40 rounds my group will look like a shotgun pattern. Just a dry brush and a patch and its good to go again.
Just smile and say nothing, let them guess how much you know.

competition rifles,......every 30 rnds or so.

hunting rifles, .....once a season and then foul the bore for the next season,

handguns,...every so often, since it really doesn't matter.

Remember fellers when cleaning your gun do not rub the barrel excessivly,it could go off in your hand[:D]

depends on the gun, handgun round count is a top end cleaning around 500 {one outing for me}, complete tear down to the frame 1,000-1,500

rifles each session unless im going to hit it again in a week or two, remember its not just round count that matters, the amount of time carbon is left in a barrel and action, aged carbon can get hard as a rock, and cause failure faster than you think

ar's you just cant clean them enough

I guess from my fathers training, if I'd be uncomfortable not cleaning my firearms after a day of shhotong. Besides, I really enjoy cleaning them.Never clean at our range, maybe at evening on overnitehunting trips, especially if its damp.

Not how many rounds, it's how long between shoots.

I wanted to see just how many rounds I could put through my Officer RIA 1911 before
it would jam or start causing feeding problems...
    Before I cleaned it again...

So... I loaded up a bunch of 45ACP ammo and hit the range...
No problems... Did it again the next week...
No problems... And... Again the next week...
    Still... NO PROBLEMS...

I finally shot 850 rounds through that gun before I cleaned it...
NEVER DID HAVE ANY PROBLEMS... NOT ONE... Period.

I attribute this not to the RIA built 1911... Just the fact that it WAS a 1911...
Government spec gun.... Loose as a goose... and will shoot ANYTHING I put in the mag.
It's as accurate as I need it to be... hitting a 3" circle at 25 yards... CONSISTENTLY.
I do use Kimber SS mags... and I did change out the trigger, sear, hammer, thumb and grip safeties along with the pins.
I polished the ramp and cleaned up anything else that needed it...
Oh, and it has some really nice grips... now, too.

So it's what I carry along with a smaller backup pocket pistol.
The backup is NOT in case the 1911 fails to shoot...
It's for when I might run out of 45ACP ammo and still need to shoot...

I'm gonna go for 2,000 rounds the next time....
    And I don't think I'll see a problem...

I always wipe down the exposed metal after handling.
Only occasionally, clean bores except for breech faces and barrels after shoot corrosive ammo.
Machine Gun Moran probably has it right on multiple cleaning when using corrosive ammo.
In the Army,I scrubbed out a new 1911 barrel using Army bore cleaner (the old stinky stuff) after firing a few shots of 1943 ammo.I put the barrel on a shelf with the bore cleaner still in it. After a few days some patches were run through it revealing fine pin point pitting.
I don't know why some board members praise that bore cleaner.

Match 22 pistol barrel, maybe once a year, 5,000 rounds or so, the action gets hosed out every 500-750 or when it seems to slow down

Match 45 wad cutter gun. 500-700 rounds I might pull a Lewis lead remover patch through it every 200 rounds or so just to make sure the barrel is lead free.
