There's a new twist at the end I haven't heard yet:

>History of Math Education

>Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl
>took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my
>pocket and gave it to her. She stood there holding the nickel and 3
>pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her
>discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she
>hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction to
>her, she stood there and
>cried.
>Why do I tell you this? Please read more about the "history of teaching

Same thing here in Georgia! Schools don't teach kids to do math anymore. They let them use calculators, for cryin out loud!

One time at a fast food restaurant, the total was like $4.26 so I gave $5.26 But the girl had no idea what to do. She gave me back 74* plus my original 26* I guess her drawer balanced, but it left me scratching my head.

I bought a pair of Red Wings a couple weeks ago. Couple nice old guys run the place. I paid and he counted my change back to me. I doubt many youngsters know how to do that anymore!

Okay two things on my mind here. First, some people, like myself, are horrible at mental math. Second, I don't know what level of math you folks achieved, but my school wouldn't let you even attempt certain levels(advanced algebra, FTS, precalc, etc) without a graphing calculator. I'm not saying it's impossible, for newton and his equals, but damn it, it's hard and very tedious at the high levels. For the record, math always came fairly easy to me and I even know how to use a slide rule or "the dinosaur's calculator".[:p]
