To answer your question since some sub par mod didn't understand the thread and zapped it, I love Plato and the Republic was the first major political discourse that has survived I know of.

Greece is where the concept of democracy originated. Athens and Thebes both ascribed man to lofty aspirations.

I know we've had our differences, but we haven't resorted to name calling when we disagree. That's quite refreshing and I've learned a lot from our few debates. Thanks for being an all around good guy. I hope you have a nice weekend. [^]

Where'd you find that ESPN UL pic in your sig line? That is great because it's so true. I got so sick and tired of hearing how they were going to win the BCS everyday on the Louisville T.V. stations.

    Well....it was an experience.

Heat index was 95 the day I made it to Damascus. I hiked for 3 days and made it just under 30 miles. It was hot to the point of being miserable. At that point I bailed out, feeling more than a bit defeated.

Another hiker, just a little North of me collapsed with a heat stroke and had to be evacuated, so I'm glad that wasnt me.

Learned a lot, met a bunch of cool people. Planning on heading back in the fall.

Do not feel defeated. That is a tough hike for anyone.

The heat index compounded that arduous task and as you said it took one person out with heat stroke.

Keep working on your local hikes and when the weather cools a bit, hit that trailhead again.

10 miles per day is by no means a fail. That?s about the average distance between shelters. SW Virginia has been in a drought and the springs and creeks are extremely low. A day hiker had to be rescued here because of dehydration. Ain?t nothing to mess around with.

Experience is gained by doing. You did it, you learned. A success not a defeat.

Wish I had to knees to even attempt it.
