found this in a pile of dads old stuff. i cant figure out why it has a 'split rim' insert in the middle axis. what would this go on? what kind of saw?[?]

but now that you mention it, dad did have a homemade table saw that ran off of a 1/3hp electric motor that ran a fan belt to a saw blade. the tension kept tight by the weight of the motor that was mounted on a hinge and it hung free. could that be what this was used for? i just cant see how it would work on a belt/pully/axle?

It's an index gear for a gatling gun . Note the way the projections on the circumference will snap into a pawl when the manually cranked rotation occurs.
