The "Jam master." You might do better taking it to the metal recycling plant.
Can anyone ask more of a gun???????
No jams, no galling of internals, no troubles.
They still are one of the more popular guns in the north east woods.
LF that Remington is "tried and failed."

I am maturing as a human being.
I was going to say it reminded me of a fancy stocked 10/22 in 30-06.
But I checked myself.
Anyone else as proud of me as I am of myself?
I hear good and bad about them...its like anything they make thousands and thousands of, there will be lemons in with the duds. This one seems to be fine.
Did a bunch of reading about the 740 and 742 online just recently after seeing one for sale at $300 with a Leupold scope, in .30-06. Opinions do vary greatly and there did not appear to be a middle camp on the matter.
The following is just a summary of my reading of many reviews, I have not owned or fired one of these guns. Merely handled some in gun shops with a particular lust back when I couldn't pay for it [:p]
My take on it is people who used the guns a lot tended to wear them out far sooner than they thought reasonable. The internals of the receiver itself would wear down and no replacing of parts would stop the jams. A new/old stock receiver, or welding and maching new metal would be thing. They also tended to be ammo sensitive. Lighter loads made for jams even in new guns.
Another camp seems to be folks who would confirm their sighting-in with a few rounds before deer season, take one deer and be done with the gun until the next season. These guns may show some ammo specific feed concerns, as in liking the heavier loads, but otherwise work well.
Both camps talked about accuracy. Some guns being bullet sprayers. Some doing reasonable groups for woodland hunting distances. Most comments focused upon the forearm being mounted so that its torque affects the barrel. Careful fitting and torquing of the forearm hardware could solve some accuracy problems.
The gun that inspired me to dig into this was well worn of bluing on every inch of it. Tells me it was well used, likely worn inside. I left it where it was. Another on GB claimed to be all original but the trigger guard was well blued while the receiver was very worn. Let it be too.
For me it boils down to I wouldn't buy a 740 or 742 in less than very good appearance, not re-blued or obviously repaired. Even then I'd not exceed $300 for the gun and scope if it has one, unless it's a very nice scope.
I did make an offer on a GB auction that never sold. Value based on the scope and ammo included, the gun I offered parts value on.
Just looking at the photos of course but Kasey's gun looks good for some I've looked at lately. If the price didn't go too high, I'd be tempted.
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
