They're part of no great conspiracy, just smart enough to realize there's an * for every seat. They're feeding a specific market in order to rake in advertising dollars, same with ALL news programs - or more correctly 'news based shows'. People are drawn to watch whichever of these outlets tends to reinforce their overall views and each one milks their audience for all they're worth.
If you believe any news outlet's true goal is to insure the public stays fully informed of what's going on in their world you probably also get up extra early every year trying to spot the Easter bunny.

Usenet was founded in 79 but nntp wasn't established till 86. I will say CNN is older than I thought but my original statement reads true, still.
