Garden pest or not ?

Saw an insect in the garden today that I have never saw before, did not have the camera with me.
The insect was in the shape of a stink bug or squash bug but the coloration on its back was more like that of a lady bug, orange, black and white in little squares, never saw the likes of a bug like this!
Another pest I ask ?? Anyone have a hint? I live in southwest Va.
