i can remember my aunt at new years eve getting a can of kippered herring and a loaf of bread and placing them on the table. she would also place a penny on the window sill. she claimed if you did that you would never go hungry or be broke. i know she always used a certain type of bread but i cant remember what type. anyone ever heard of this or know what type of bread is to be placed on the table

I think it's an Appalachian thing, probably derived from Scots-Irish ancestors.
