Lease to Own. New store opened in town.

32" led tv

$9 a week
for 156 weeks $1404 or cash of $702

I will make a bet I can even find it cheaper.

It's all about cash-flow. they buy into getting something for "$9/wk" without figuring out that the TV will be obsoleted long before it's paid-off. but then that's the mindset of a lot of people- everything is disposable. Sad state of affairs[:(]

Yep, there's already 2 of those in town, and a new one named Aarons just opened up. They are just as dumb as those payday loan outfits.

they have a targeted clientele, mostly low income families or people that don't like to pay their bills

average markup is 500% and its a high risk at that, i had to work for a major chain one year to get by, had people that did have decent jobs and paid up to 400 dollars a week to furnish their entire home, i managed 650+ accounts and out of that maybe 5 where white, im not saying that they do not branch out into white areas, but big cities are their bread and butter

Similar to Fingerhut catalog. An item that can be purchased for $100 anywhere else will cost around $250 from them, only pay a few dollars per month.

I met the founders of a rent-to-own chain of stores in another business, and they were making a fortune. Latest to open are the "Your Car Title for Cash" . What possibly could go wrong with that scenario?

Yes. Just think, if you did not vote for Obama you are more intelligent than around 52% of the voters in this country.

It is the same reason car dealers come at you with "what payment you want" rather than the total price or the length of the loan. We can work out any payment to fit your "budget".

Unlike the well off crowd on this forum who pays cash for everything from a jug of milk to a million $ yact, not everyone can pay cash for things they want. Yes I k iw it is hard to believe for some of you but many folks can only get low paying jobs and handing over $1000 in cash is near impossible. Why is Aarons better than a Visa Card? Credit checks hurt your credit and if you can no longer pay for the item Aarons will take it back and not file a report on you like Visa will.

Again, I know its hard for you folks with liquid cash laying laying around to believe this but its true. Also the folks that claim if they cant pay cash for something they dont need it, must be nice to have no bills or a high paying job that allows you to bank cash. Sometimes people do what they have to so or they just go without. From the sounds of it here on the forum someone making less than $10 per hour should never own anything nice.

I believe some folks' point may be that if you can't afford to pay cash for a $702 TV you shouldn't be buying it in the first place. A TV would be considered a luxury not a necessity if you are so strapped for money that you can only buy it on $9.00 weekly payments that cost you double the price of the TV to begin with. Many of the folks being taken for ride on these rent to own deals are paying for it with government provided, tax payer supported welfare programs.

Aside from the welfare folks who can get a visa card not everyone can take $700 and drop it like that. Are you saying that since I cannot plop down $50K for a new F250 I should not buy one?

Where's all the folks who believe in capitalism? Places like Asrons is a perfect example of capitalism.

BSR it souns like none of them have ever been in one of those stores.

Did you guys know that RAC offers 90 days same as cash with no interest. Yeah their prices may be a little higher than some other discount place. But if your credit might be a little shaky and you need a new washer or dryer, it's a lot better than going to laundrymat while trying to save the money to buy a new washer. And unlike lay away you take it home now not when paid off.

Thats funny right there. A fella putting ammo on GB at a dollar start and selling it for what someone is willing to pay is a "scalper", but a store like Aarons is helping the poor. What's the elevation where you live?

HPD, you caught that before the edit, my comment was out of line and you nailed it before I could hide it [:D]

My issue with the scalpers is those who will beat the masses and buy all they can get at normal retail prices with the sole intent of "flipping" it for profit, this subject has been beat to death and I dont wish to argue it any more [;)]

    WE HAVE A WINNER!

Dad always said if you can't pay cash, you can't afford it. That applied to everyday items but not land that will produce, equipment used to earn a living or a home.

I agree with your dad. And even with the exceptions he lists, you have to be sure you don't spend beyond the value returned by those things (e.g., the highest-end tools when less expensive could do the job, or a million-dollar house when you could have decent shelter for much less).

Well let me see, our country owes 17 trillion dollars and we give no telling how many countries Billions that we have to borrow half of. You don't have to look very for to find stupid. Now they have voted to allow Banks in the high risk loan business. Of course that has never happened before, unless you owned stock in 2008 and you might have seen a little of that then.
I would be willing to say over 75% of the families today could not go a month without a paycheck and still pay their bills.
Were I grew up, from the 40's to the 70's there was one pawn shop and one place you could get a loan outside a bank. There must be 5 pawn shops and at least three fast loan joints and I would say there is maybe 10% more people living there.

What's worse, the businesses who profit from the people who can't afford some of the perks in life by selling it at a enormous profit, or the people who have no choice?

    Kinsa a catch 22 scenario.

    Yup they're stupid.

and the 32" LED that's $700 is not significantly better than the one at walmart that costs $179.
    http://www.walmart.com/ip/SCEPTRE-X322BV-HDR-32-LED-Class-720P-HDTV-with-ultra-slim-metal-brush-bezel-60Hz/25059351

Oh, but they can't save $10 a week for 18 weeks. Must have it now for $1400 over the next 3 years.

    Yes ,
As stated before , People are stupid @ times , some more than others ...

It is crazy to pay three or four times the regular price for something !
and for some people , its really the only way 'to get what they want '
and the 'get it now' is a big part of that ....

But , also as stated , not all of us have access to loads of cash ( or even good credit ) , so ,,, its waite and save (TRY) or , go to a buy here - pay here overprice dealer ???

At one point in life , I could have said that most anything I wanted , I could have went and bought , mostly with cash , and some really good credit ( even vehicles ) , but that is NOT the case today !!!

As stated in another thread ( posts ) , I am in the middle of a "bank * " that involves $403 , and It Hurts Bad !!!!!

when the wife and i first got together we did a rent to own on a washer and dryer set. Are parents through a fit about wasting money like that. Shut them up in a hurry when i explained how it saved us money. We were spending 20.00 a week at the laundry mat washing close. The washer and dryer set was 10 a week for the set and we were putting the money toward owning the set.

It's not about having lots of money or not having money problems.

It's about buying things they can't afford (TV) with money they don't have because they want it right now.

Sometimes you have to finance a $2,000 car because you need to have it to get to work. I don't think paying $1400 for a TV will give you the same return on your "investment."
