Another quick question for you mechanics...

On that front wheel drive Sentra we got for Joe...when you are making a sharp left hand turn, the steering wheel wants to jump back and forth considerably. Any idea what might cause such a thing. I also notice the car shuddering when braking hard, but I think that's probably a warped rotor.

I was going to drive that car to the VA today, but I'm worried about the fire hazard potential with the way it's blowing oil out of the dip stick. It was smoking pretty good after I took it for a 20 mile drive yesterday.

The CVs are out. They are not hard to replace. They are normally a sealed unit so you have to get the whole shaft.

As stated above... A CV or universal.

Replacement depends on the type of joint with the universal usually being replaceable. (This is the case with your truck.) CV's are the rule on front drive cars and usually are part of the shaft.

Symptoms are as described. Wheels straight and no problem. Start to cramp the wheel and the tighter the turn the more bucking and vibration.

I might suggest a press to remove the shaft from the bearing assembly and also warn that in many cases you can plan on an alignment as part of the replacement. Also a torque wrench is highly recommended.

Good luck with the VA. I'll be thinking of you and hoping for the best. My experience with VA is that they're not uncaring, but that they sometimes don't deliver the best of options. This isn't to say that you can expect better anywhere else.

    +1
Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

That generally happens when you go the inexpensive route. I saw a study once that showed that a new car and an older used car in essence cost the same amount when you factor in repairs.

The difference is that with a new car, your payments are consistent and even. With a used car, you may go awhile without spending a dime, then have a large bill for a single repair.
